pag brand new at wala pa mileage, then we get the actual cost of the car as the cost per km.
we can equate the "newness" of the car based on its mileage. i did not factor the depreciation in the computation to keep things simple.
Hard to add depreciation unless you have a set mileage per month. My estimate is simply PMS and insurance and registration.
In the thread starter's case, at 1000 per month... assume a brand new subcompact or supermini doing 10 km/l in mixed traffic. Assume 20% per year (typical for companies to assume 20% right? Then throw away the car in the fifth year or offer to sell it to the employee?)...
That's 20 pesos per km for a brand new Vios, and about 15 per km for a 2005 (assuming 350k purchase price).
Wala pa diyan tires... but at 12k per year, maybe four or five years before you need tires. Maybe save 50 centavos per kilometer if you get cheaper insurance... but can only do that with secondhand car where you're not locked in to dealership insurance.
So roughly 15-20k per month in liabilities with a fuel-efficient subcompact. But that's virtual. Depreciation is not something you pay out of pocket. It's just what you lose from the purchase price.
What you'll feel is 8-9k per month in expenses. If you take a taxi five days a week, that's only 7k per month. And without the lost opportunity cost of having bought a car that will lose 100-150k pesos in value over five years.
Of course... it's much nicer to have a car. But if you want to save... take a jeep or walk.![]()

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
and don't forget about parking fees. car wash. car wax. that new seat cover since you don't want the smell of the one that came with the car. air freshener. new floor mats. rain gutters. new tint. new 2 din dvd/mp3/ipod with bluetooth head unit with 7 inch touch screen with gps. bling-blings.
that new sports sunglasses you just have to get to complete the look.
and if you're the type, the wind and solar powered laundry drier at the back they call wings.
and years ago i told my friends i don't need a car. it's like a drug, really. not just habit forming, it's much much worst.![]()
If you're used to a certain quality of life... yes. If not:
When I stayed in Taiwan a while back, even upper-middle class families rode motorbikes everywhere. Together. Left the cars at home. That could be done in the Philippines quite easily if we didn't have to share the road with idiots in trucks all the time... if our highway systems were constructed so trucks could bypass towns completely.
But here in the Philippines, since we were an American colony, we got into car addiction early. Now, instead of having helmet-wearing white-collars driving motorbikes around, we instead have slipper-wearing hoodlums zipping in and out of traffic, giving riders everywhere a bad name.
Hahaha... mismo!![]()

Cheaper to wait and buy... but it's up to you.
Here's a VERY rough breakdown (because insurance will also change downwards with depreciation, suspension, tire and brake issues in the second and third year will add to the cost... and really... I don't know the EXACT registration cost for such small cars)... adjusted downwards based on the fact that insurance starts cheaper for an older car.
12,000 km per year
Php10,000.00 yearly maintenance (assumed)
Php2,500.00 Registration (est)
Php25,000.00 Insurance (for a three-to-five year old car)
Php37,500.00 Yearly added costs
10 km/l economy
1,200 liters
Php52.00 gas price
Php62,400.00 gas total
Php99,900.00 TOTAL PER YEAR without DEPRECIATION
Php8.33 TOTAL PER KM without DEPRECIATION
Php435,000.00 Purchase Price
15 Depreciation, %
Php65,250.00 FIRST YEAR Depreciation
Php165,150.00 TOTAL FIRST YEAR with DEPRECIATION
Php13.76 TOTAL PER KM with DEPRECIATION
Php369,750.00 2nd Year Value
Php55,462.50 2nd Year Depreciation
Php155,362.50 TOTAL 2ND YEAR with DEP
Php12.95 TOTAL 2ND YEAR PER KM with DEP
Php314,287.50 3rd Year Value
Php47,143.13 3rd Year Depreciation
Php147,043.13 TOTAL 3RD YEAR with DEP
Php12.25 TOTAL 3RD YEAR PER KM with DEP

If you're reselling the car when you buy a new one, you have to take depreciation into consideration. The above assumes that the Vios secondhand depreciates like a normal car... but it's a Toyota... people are willing to pay a little more secondhand... in reality, you might be able to sell it for 320k instead of 280k after three years. Then again... if you have to sell quickly in order to purchase a new Vios, then people will try to screw you on the sale.

Given Manila traffic, it's slightly cheaper than going all 12,000 kilometers by taxi...
12,000 km per year
20 Assumed Trip Length
Php40.00 Flag Down Rate (first 500m)
Php3.50 Per 300 meters
Php3.50 Per 2 minutes
600 Number of trips
Php247.50 Cost Per Trip
Php12.38 Cost Per KM
Php148,500.00 Cost Per Year (no traffic)
20 Average wait time per trip... say, each 20 km trip takes about 40 minutes... so 20 minutes waiting time
12,000 Total Wait time
Php21,000.00 Total wait time cost
Php14.13 Cost Per KM
Php282.50 Cost Per Trip... exactly as you stated
Php169,500.00 Cost Per Year (traffic)
When taking a taxi, you are paying for the amortization of the operator's car and the taxi driver's salary... but if you are taking the jeep and bus by day and only take the taxi by night... it's much, much cheaper to commute. Especially if you will buy a brand new Vios. When I don't have my family with me, I sometimes take the bus and MRT/LRT. The MRT/LRT are a hassle, but it's hella faster than driving, and while the bus is slower, I get to catch a few zzzz's on the bus. Something I can't do in a car or a taxi safely.

Whew.
Then again... when you buy a car... you're buying it for selfish reasons... so, if you have the money to spend... go ahead.![]()

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
After all that, I did a spreadsheet on the costs of running a taxi. My hair turned a white shade of gray. The net income portion of the spreadsheet was all red ink. Kaya pala ang lakas nila humingi ng boundary sa driver.

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
Hahaha. Spreadsheet. Ginawa ko din ito before my purchase. And I still updating it pag may pagbabago sa earnings and finances. Everytime I update it, it gives me sleepless nights. Hahaha.
On topic, magastos ang magka-Car. Mas madali nga lang pag magtravel ka na. Lagay lang mga gamit sa trunk, larga na... If commute, buhat buhat mo pa yung 8-15 kilos na bags.
Around 1,000 Kms travel ko every month. So around 5,000 pesos sa gas. Add toll pa na 2,000 pesos. Parking fees, etc... So around 8-10K per month. Wala pa maintenance and insurance. Pero I am keeping 4K per month for the maintenance and insurance. So in total, 14,000 pesos ang gastos ko per month sa car. Pero kung mababa naman maintenance, baka it could go down to 11K-12K.
By the way, on top pa dito yung monthly ammortization.![]()
gumawa rin ako spreadsheet ng gastusin sa oto ... sumakit lang ulo ko![]()
