I always fill up before going on the highway, and fill up again after leaving the highway. Full tank method.

For city driving, I just take note of the general traffic condition for the entire duration of my full tank. This is usually moderate to heavy traffic. Unfortunately my car doesn't log average speed (resets everytime you turn off the engine), but my previous one did.
