The plastic thing is a spacer. There are 2 uses. 1 is to allow more room for the magnet, I belive you have 5.25 inchers, I doubt that you need to create more space. The other use is to get better sealing between the speaker and the door. Think of it like a gasket. Although, carpet or a real gasket will work better than plastic.
To get better sound, tune your amp and play around with your HU and Xover settings. Make sure your amp can supply your speaker with enough power. You can upgrade to a 6.5 inch. Or get your doors sound deadened.
