As far as I know, all aftermarket head units nowadays comes with mp3/iPod functionality. If we are to use industry-leader Pioneer as reference, even their most affordable head unit (the DEH-X1 series) at Php5,000 has the said functionality. Personally, I'd pick any head unit brand that's fairly well known: Sony, Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer, etc. for the purchase.

For reputable shops, to be honest, any in Banawe would do. The installation process is quite easy so even those barkers on the street actually knows how to install one. However, I would recommend you stick to a shop for peace of mind For the shop recommendations, just pick any. They don't really differ that far in price and this is a given seeing how the shops in Banawe are lined up one after the other (making comparisons quite easy so the area is price-sensitive).

If you'll be around "old Banawe", you're looking at the likes of Maspro, Perfect Circle, and Ryan Audio. In "new" Banawe, you're looking at C3, TeamCars, JetCar, etc. Of course, famous budget-friendly Araneta Car Accessories also deserves a mention although they're at Araneta Avenue going to Sta. Mesa.

Yup. Don't buy into these "pairing" stuff that shops sell to you. Anything lower than Php10,000 usually sound the same because they're limited by their budget. You can't just try to throw in diamond tweeters and price them at Php5k now can we?

Thanks jhnkvn! Would prices be cheaper if I opt to go to Araneta Car Accessories instead of Banawe? Among the brands that you've mentioned, which is best and which brand would be cheapest?

Boss Jhnkvn though does not have the word "Cheapest" in his vocabulary. He only gets highend stuff.

Araneta Car Accessories carries parallel imports which cost a little bit less. They call them "Bumbay" units. The only difference is a shorter or non-existent warranty.

Haha! Not really looking for high-end stuff here, just a simple bang for the buck head unit. Sorry for the noob question, but are the parallel import units original? It's just that they're being sold in the grey market?

Yes they're still original. But since they're grey market imports, they don't enjoy local warranty services.

I usually just simplify it as "old vs new" tbh. Technical goodies include that the newer model does not have MirrorLink since it was slow as a sloth. But it has a better screen due to being OLED I heard. Also heard that it's a semi-downgrade due to a lower DAC sampling rate but I don't think those will factor in to the decision of your everyday listener. For one, I still listen to 320kbps MP3 files. Firmware for the newer model is better too as the 8750BT tend to simply shut down mysteriously due to a bad firmware.

I asked some shops for advice re a budget upgrade for my 3. I was initially choosing between separates and a small sub but it looks like the separates upgrade with deadening is the way to go. My usual sources are FM and MP3s via Bluetooth. I don't want to drown out outside noise too much as it helps with situational awareness. I'm only looking for a bit more boom for the buck.

Here are the offers that met my 5-8k budget:
TEAC seps + Kinetic Amp + Acoustipad
    Ryan Audio seps + StP
    JBL seps + Silent Coat
Infinity Reference seps + Silent Coat

I haven't auditioned these yet so I have no idea how they sound. I prefer a warm sounding setup.

    Advice? Tnx!

I would suggest a step by step approach in audio setup mods. If you have a capable head unit already, maybe you can start with buying a good set of separates. Next step would be getting a capable amplifier and the necessary wiring. Last one would be the subwoofer and its box. Deadening is a good addition but it is entirely dependent on you.

If you aim for warm sounding speakers, I would suggest DLS or Morel. These two brands are quite good. Their products can take a good amount of juice and can be tuned for SQ or loud&clear setups.

    1. What's your head unit?
    2. Among them all, I'll choose either the Ryan Audio or JBL setup out of sheer bias (hehe)
    3. If you're looking for more boom, you might want to look at subwoofers too. Nothing fills out the bottom end better than a subwoofer.

I'll just be using the stock HU of the 3. I may be able to get a DLS or Morel by foregoing deadening for now but will they work well without an additional amp?

    1. I'll be using the stock HU of the Mazda 3. Installing a LOC is possible but I'm not ready to go down that road yet.
    2. Choosing the Ryan will possibly get me more deadening coverage because it's cheaper.
    3. I'll reconsider this option.

    Thanks guys!

    Thanks guys!
Is it the new Mazda3? I don't know how good the stock HUs of new cars are but the stock HU on my Fiesta Ecoboost and Forester XT are better compared the stock ones on our old cars (including the 2009 City and Jazz).

DLS and Morel speakers will be fine with a bit of juice (15-20 watts from stock HUs) but remember that you're building for a future audio modification. I had a DLS 2-way active setup before (DLS R6A powered by a DLS CA51 amp, plus an RF slim sub) in my old Exalta and I was very happy with it. My other NissanBayan friends have even better setups with DLS Ultimate, Morel Supremo, and Brax setups.

If you want speakers with a bit more sensitivity, you can opt for Focal models. I have heard good things about the newer PS line which they say sounds better than the Access models.

Before we give you some options on what to do we need to know the ff:. May I know what exactly you are powering with your existing amplifier? Saan ka nahihinaan, sa output nang seps or subs? Who tuned/installed your system?

currently, my amp is powering both the seps and sub. my setup was done by a car audio shop in las pinas. i was told by the installer that the crossover was set to -3db. i was looking for a more output from the tweeter so i brought my car to bp1 car audio in binan. the guy there told me that we need to put additional wiring because the first installer just used a sort of splitter. so the additional wiring was connected and he made some adjustments in my 5750bt hu and amp. the bass was softened and the sound was a little bit clearer. he advised me to replace my amp with dc 120 x 4 amp because my existing amp is overpowered by my firland ev612 seps that caused my amp to heat fast.

Baliw naman pala ang 1st installer mo. Based on what you mentioned, it seems he only used one RCA cable and used a Y-connector to split the front signal of your HU for the seps and subs. The 2nd installer added another RCA cable so the front signal goes to the seps and hopefully the sub-out signal for the subs. Would you check if you can control the volume levelof your subs using the sub level control on your HU. Paki confirm muna bro before I continue. Let's see if we could do something 1st with the install before you spend for a new amp.

Thanks a lot bro. Yes. I can now control the level of my sub thru my hu after the adjustment by the 2nd installer.
