Is there a guide out there that lists the model of the car, generation, and engine type? Are there ways or characteristics that define each one?
Wikipedia is your friend. For each model/generation, they list down the engines and their corresponding nomenclature. Take note though that even within the same nomenclature, if the year model is different, you can be talking about 2 different engines.

The good thing about BMW is that the nomenclature is standard across the world. A 2001 E46 318i will have a 2.0L N42 engine whether you buy it in the Philippines or in the US.
