    For me I will go for FORM OVER FUNCTION... simple compromise for function is an inevitable sacrifice for form.
    DESIGN should not be reduced to "form" (aka styling - whether exterior or interior). Maraming issues.

    It's not simply "form vs function" anymore. The design process is a series of decisions, and in every decision - no matter how small - you have to answer FOUR basic questions:
    1. > AESTHETICS - Is it pleasant to the senses of the beholders?
    2. > UTILITIES - How useful is it, really?
    3. > ENGINEERING - Is it doable and safe?
    4. > ECONOMICS - Is it affordable to the target market?

    These are the four balls a designer must continuously juggle in the design process. On rare occasions, economics is not an object. At other times, aesthetics is the priority over the other three. For military and construction vehicles, it's utility and engineering over aesthetics and economics.

    As you can see, priorities can vary among these four criteria, depending on the project. The lower ranking criteria should consistently serve the requirements of the highter priorities.

    As with most UVs, for the Tsikot PhUV, the order of priorities would be :

    1) Economics
    2) Utility
    3) Engineering
    4) Aesthetics

    By no means does this imply that it's OK to have a lousy look. Rather it says that we should strive to have the coolest look and feel possible, without sacrificing the first three criteria. The challenge is to come up with the "coolest" (aesthetic) vehicle possible which serves the higher priority criteria.

    Found these articles, ebooks and software that might help you guys. May our collective minds be stimulated even more.

    To all of you who have an ME background, my next contribution would be to get my hands on a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Simulation Software and share it with you guys to make the task of engine design
    easier for those who are interested. Software simulators nowadays are so darn accurate that you can model practically everything in the virtual world and know to a certain extent that it will function as designed in the real world. We can bypass the "nuts and bolts" not to mention the huge budgets of doing it the old way.

    * TAMBAY..

    thanks man.

    can you FEA?

    do you know of any sites that offer free 3D models of car parts? in 3DS, DWG, or DXF formats

    You're welcome bro, To answer your question If I do FEA or Finite Element Analysis, No I'm not at that level yet. But I do believe that there are talented Mechanical or Structural Engineers from the rosters of DLSU or any good engineering school for that matter who are capable of undertaking this task. AFAIK its basically used for Stress Analysis and also has broad applications in the automotive engineering field especially with regards to safety of the elements or parts of a car. I'm still just a newbie in this whole car design thingy and basically am still at the research stage which I'm quite good at. If you want free 3ds car models follow these steps..

    1). Go to u*******.com
    2). Download their client software then install it.
    3). Run the u******* client (you will notice it's green u icon with a circle at the lower right hand corner of your desktop).
    4). Go to Btjunkie.org and at the search bar type 3ds models the press the search button and you will get a list in the results panel. Double click the ones with a green bar at the meter found on the right side of the panel. Those ones are the active files and the ones with red bar are basically inactive and cannot be downloaded. Just confirm the ******* download instructions with the Ok button. When you switch over to u******* client you will find its already downloading. Right click the file being downloaded to give you more menu options like priority and speed etc. When its finished you can just double click the file to open it or you can open its containing folder. In case you're wondering, I'm an Industrial Engineer so my forte is more on the production side of things but I've also had some 3d AutoCAD modelling background. Hope this helps.

    Thanks Tambay,

    Actually, what I want are exact 3D models of car parts. Yung galing dun sa manufacturer. This way, I can easily build a complete, exact model...with real existing parts.

    Although not impossible, looking for 3D models of car parts on the internet would be a difficult task given that most manufacturers regard it as a trade secret and as a matter of confidentiality would probably only share it with companies that they have collaborations with. You can also try searching for machinist plans but if the source is quite dubious the accuracy of the measurements might be doubtful and even then they might not necessarily be free. At this point, I would suggest downloading some reverse engineering books and or software like geomagic, rapidform etc. which would be an easier task and buy/build a 3D scanner so you can just digitize the actual parts themselves to create the 3d models. Still, you might have to tweak the digitized data a bit depending on how accurate your scanner is.

    I just found a whole catalog of 3D car models / parts etc. just don't know if it came from manufacturers or just the work of modelers. There's a free option but you have to register and upload some models to get some credit for free download. You can try downloading the ones you found at Btjunkie then upload it to this site to get the credits. Here's the link;

    This one looks more legit and seems like it's free. You need to download Viewpoint media player to view, rotate, zoom the models etc. Here's the link;

    yup, i know rapidform. I am actually trying to revive a 3D scanner at work. medyo pinabayaan kasi bulky. Its made with 2(yes, 2 for speed) minolta vivid 900 3D scanners. it has a turntable to automatically rotate the object. right now im using a trial software, pati yung rapidform trial.

    i have actually tried downloading 3D parts..sa thomas.net, kaya lang pang utility vehicle bodies e. you're suggestion to download and then upload is a good idea. i'll probably try it when i find the time.

    DIY 3D scanner! hmmm interesting
