Industrial Design is a good start... since we don't really have a Transportation Design course available in the Philippines... but I believe we will be having soon.

I would also suggest having a hobby like scale modeling... painting... be involved with motorsports or even bicycle sports... this will give you a closer look and be in touch with how mechanical dynamics play with each other.

Be on guard on seminars for aerodynamics... ergonomics, etc.

there are many things tha play around car design.

    There also many branches involved.

Car Designers are divided into many branches.. we have:

    1. Exterior Stylist
    2. Interior Stylist
    3. Design Engineers
    4. Modelers
    5. Structural Engineer/ Designer
    6. etc., the list goes on.

In major car companies worldwide... the ratio is 1 Design Chief (Car Designer) is to 16 Design Engineers.

there are about 3,000 professional Car Designers in the world today but only 50% is employed.

FORESEE Car Design School in the Netherlands is a good online Car Design School... they will ask you to send your sampler... then decide whether you have it or not.

If you do, they will encourage you to continue the course... if not, they will also advise you.

This is a peculiar road, it is also less travelled... and Car Design involves many discipline to begin with... because a succesful design is always a product of thought.... a well thought of idea becomes a concept.

This is not an easy task... conceptualizing is work based on reading many books, putting many times in reflecting, sometimes meditation is helpful... actually most of the times... And one concept cannot just be made overnight... sometimes, it takes years before one pops out... but it is after a long time put into giving thought, reflection... and pondering.

Designers normally are daydreamers... the time spent daydreaming are actually working inside their brain. Unless you want to be misunderstood by everyone around you... I suggest you do the daydreaming in private.

I will give one tip... Design is not about being influenced by what is around you.... it is about creating something new and fresh... to the eyes and to the overall senses and experience. In other words... concepts are like works of art... they all have different impact to the looker. This impact is all that matters.

also, read materials like "History of the Automobile"... make research, study their design philosophies... place all of those most beautiful car posters in your room so you will be able to have full immersion to the world you wanted to enter into.

Until you develop a trained eye - to see the signature of designers in any Vehicle you see in the street... I remember, I was once tested in Europe if I can identify the make of some cars that were entirely very new... they were surprised I guessed all correct.

It's like courting a girl... before you really take the first step of pursuing her... you first make a background investigation. everything associated to her, you want to know.

In short... Passion is a key element.

But be prepared to be ridiculed by everyone around you... including your parents. this is not a career like nursing, medicine, computer science, or even engineering... it's more peculiar than architecture... why? Because - there are not too many client companies around. Unless you make your own company - like what Volvo told me in 1990's.

don't be discouraged... just enrich yourself by immersing into Automotive world.... don't be fascinated with the modern designs... take some tips from the classics... 1950's up to 1980's. Modern Styling is more generic...

By the way, Car Design is a long process... the concept drawing normally ends up looking different from the actual prototype or the production model.

I hope you have learned something here....

    Hi donutb0y.
You are in the most enviable position of being so close to the Pasadena Art Center
(aka, Art Center College of Design). Well, at least closer than all of us here.

If I were younger, I would enrol there.
It's the alma mater of all the biggest names in auto design.
Man, it's within your reach! Go for it!
Your mission -- should you decide to accept it -- is to finish the course and when you are stable, to help sustain an automotive design institute here in the Philippines.

i certainly agree to that. daydreams are not mere imagination but precognitions worth believing. your goal is within your grasp and why hesitate? rare oppurtunities come only a second of a blue moon you know.
Damn, son! Where'd you find this?

    *donutb0y,

For all intents and purposes, San Jose is too far from Concord to commute on a daily basis. Or are you planning to do just that?

So most likely, you will end up staying on campus for either SJSU or the Art Center. Of course, the advantage of the former is that it would be quite easy for you to go home on weekends.

But then if you have your own car, Pasadena to Concord shouldn't be too much of a drive, especially if you like driving. Besides, I am pretty sure you will find fellow Bay Area guys in Pasadena who will join you for the ride.

Years ago, I actually drove every other weekend from Cerritos to SanFran. I drove up Friday nights and returned early Monday mornings. The other weekends, I flew to Connecticut. It made for a rather hectic sked but I got used to it and was able to maintain it for several months.

Anyways, as for the costs - you can always try applying for grants and scholarships. I know some Fil-Ams who were able to get scholarships under the Pacific Islander category. Personally I am not sure if that is proper since I believe most Fil-Ams would consider themselves Asian or Southeast Asians. But I guess it all depends on the ones giving the grants or scholarships. After all, as one official told me, Philippines is in the Pacific Ocean, and it is composed of islands. So how can it be that Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders?

i hope i can pass for a scholarship... but i guess ill go to san jose.. it's much nearer to concord... and i'll stay with my cousin.. i like the bay area better than LA... but yeah.. i still have 3 years to think about it! ang id naman kasi di lang naman about cars e... but cars will be my main focus though..

    Crowdsourcing the Electric Car

Tesla Motors is Silicon Valley's first car company, founded by geeks rather than gearheads. The startup behind the forthcoming all-electric Roadster sports car may also be the first Web 2.0 automaker. Tesla execs regularly blog, detailing the development of the zero-to-60-in-four-seconds, $98,000 Roadster and engaging potential buyers and green car supporters in discussions about everything from the engineering challenges of producing an EV to marketing strategies. Now the San Carlos company is tapping its fan base to gather data to be used in designing home charging stations for the Roadster and, presumably, for future cars like the WhiteStar electric sedan under development.

In a blog post last week, Tesla founder and president of technology Martin Eberhard asked EV enthusiasts to download an Excel spreadsheet to record information about their home's circuitry and the electrical load created by their various appliances. "Okay everybody, I need a little help from you," wrote Eberhard. "What is the biggest EV charging circuit that could be installed in your house? This sounds like an easy question, but it turns out not to be. The answer depends on a lot of factors....Help me out here: Download the spreadsheet, roll up your sleeves, survey your own electrical service, and report back to me. If you are really inspired, do a few more houses – your parents, your brother, your neighbor, whatever." (Tesla is also getting help from California utility PG&E on the home-charging front. A prototype charging station is pictured at right.) Telsa communications director David Vespremi told Green Wombat that more than 30 people have sent in surveys over the past week.

Back in June, Green Wombat sat down with Eberhard at Tesla's headquarters to talk about electric cars and the benefits of blogging the development of the Roadster. "We get more customer feedback, more market data than you could ever get from the most expensive market survey you could pay for," Eberhard says. "Being open and getting feedback has been tremendously useful to us. I'm not a big believer in market surveys and focus groups. They're useful for small things, like 'does this user interface actually work?' On the hand with the blogs its a constant conversation and the amount of data and the quality of it is very good. We know our customers, what they know and don't know, how to target our messaging, and whether our message is getting through. I think the secrecy thing is overrated."

And it goes without saying, that's a great PR and marketing strategy. Eberhard, of course, acknowledges that Tesla keeps its core technology secret. And that as a startup that has yet to put its first car into production, the company can afford to be more open than competitors who can't risk killing demand their current lineup of cars by disclosing too much information about the next model. "If I had already some other sports car on the road and was coming out with the Roadster I'd have to be more careful about it," he says. "With WhiteStar we're taking a pretty calculated gamble that people who would opt for WhiteStar, most of them wouldn't have opted for a Roadster anyway. We'll have to be a little more careful down the road, that's just the market reality. We'll try to remain an open and transparent company. Even if I'm not telling people about features on the car, I'll tell people why."

    Picturing the iCar

A brief report in the German magazine Capital that Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs and Volkswagen chief Martin Winterkorn met in California recently to share ideas about a so-called iCar has Apple watchers scratching their heads once again about what such a car would look like.
Apple, of course, has been working with automakers since at least January 2005, when the first iPod-ready Mercedes-Benz rolled off the line. Since then, according to Macworld, Toyota, Citroen and Lamborghini have all announced iPod integration in new model cars.
Apple's relationship with Jaguar goes deeper than that. "We have been working with Apple on control interfaces," Ian Callum, designer of the new Jaguar XF, told Car Magazine recently. Like the keypad-free iPhone, the new Jag does without a gearshift, opting instead for a "drive selector." As Callum describes it, the car boots up like a Mac:
Step inside and the starter button starts to pulsate like a heartbeat. Press it and the car comes to life. The air vents rise up and the JaguarDrive Selector pops up. (link)
But judging from earlier reports, the Apple-VW collaboration is something else again. In July, AppleScoop posted a fuzzy screenshot of a concept car the two companies were said to be working on and shared what they'd heard about it:
Rumor has it that the vehicle will sport Apple's AirPort networking system along with a touch-screen, modified version of the popular iMac. Not many specifics were given on the design or it's potential features, but my source says the iCar will do to other luxury vehicles what the iPhone did to other smart phones. (link)
That got the staff at Engadget thinking. They dug up the old Chris O'Riley illustration at the top of this page and brainstormed about what an Apple iCar could do:
    Ryan: "Can hit 100Mph, can't hit 100Kbps."
Evan: "The scroll wheel would be hard to steer in sharp turns."
Paul: "Give it a few weeks and you should be breaking 25Mph no sweat."
Nilay: "It only uses one kid of gas!"
Josh: "I hear it doesn't have 3G either."
Chris: "Internal combustion engines were stupid until we decided to use them."
    Dante: "White." (link)

    Concept Car?

Here's one originally was a concept car built by seven people in their backyard at Sommerset UK. The chassis was then adapted by Wrightspeed and mounted an electric motor, which then beats ferrari & porshe in a quatermile drag.

Good Idea for the wanna be local car manufacturer.
There are pros and cons, syempre.
Pero I bet this would sell like hot potatoes

It used used to be just a concept years ago - posted in car design news.com. The electric version is fun to watch beating the supercars in You tube. also making donuts. The one shown in top gear had a honda engine in it. It's a prototype already... a proof of concept. now - their next problem is making a real car body to cover it.

I still recall when they posted it some years ago when it was still a sketch... it was just a subframe with x submembers, thus the X-1 name was derived. It's actually a Lotus 7 inspired concept. ultra minimalism.

A subcompact car from Hong Kong -

    http://www.kingdom.com.hk/doce/maps_location/euauto.htm

mycar is an environmental friendly micro-car designed by world-class automobile designer Mr. Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italy. This project has attracted tremendous attention throughout Europe, Asia and as far as North and Central America. While the Hong Kong SAR government puts automobile component industry as one of the top 6 segment to be focused, mycar is well inline with this strategy. This project is also endorsed by the Hong Kong Innovation of Technology Commission by granting it the Research and Development funding.

Mr. Peter Sun, as the major shareholder and Chairman of mycar project, has vision to develop and market environmental friendly mini vehicles to Europe, North America and Asia.

The mycar project was initiated through Hong Kong Ploytechnic University and a couple local industrialists including Mr. Peter Sun and Mr. Raymond Chan. A joint venture company was formed namely EuAuto Technology Limited (previously was under Innovech Technology Limited).
To make the project successful, the team engaged expertise around the world. With the magic touch of Mr. Giugiaro on the styling of mycar , complimented with years of China manufacturing background through Peter’s corporation (Kingdom Group), the product will be able to balance the European stylish design and good quality at an affordable price to customers.

Mycar will have different version : gasoline, electric and hybrid. To help us speeding up the development and approval process, we are working closely with international partners to combine the strengths and expertise for multinational markets.

For those who are interested in what is probably the most important OPV yet conceptualized, here are the links to Eduardo San Juan's research paper that led to the Lunar Rover.

San Juan did his research for the Hayes International Corporation,

The document shows that San Juan conceptualized not just the vehicle, but the Lunar Shelter as well.

    A must-read for aspiring OPV designers! :2thumbsup:

Topia Prototypes 150kg One-seater Electric Vehicle

    Jun 27, 2008 18:42
    Chikara Nakayama, Nikkei Monozukuri

The "HUVO" electric vehicle weighing 150kg: The resin parts were manufactured by RP systems.

    HUVO's body frame

Topia Corp, a company engaged in designing and prototyping automobiles, prototyped a single-seater electric vehicle "HUVO," which weighs only about 150kg (330 lb).
The vehicle was exhibited at the booth of Marubeni Information Systems Co Ltd in the 19th Design Engineering & Manufacturing Solutions Expo (DMS), which is an IT solution exhibition for manufacturers and runs from June 25-27, 2008, at Tokyo Big Sight.
The HUVO was developed by using Topia's proprietary design and production technologies, the company said.

If a vehicle of the same size as HUVO is made with existing technologies, it would weigh about 300kg, said Hideki Sasaki, president & CEO of Topia.

The body frame is made of high-tensile steel plate, the doors on both sides and the back panel are made of aluminum alloy, the roof is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the windshield is made of polycarbonate, and the interior parts and the wheel covers are made of ABS resin.

For pressed parts such as the body frame and the doors, Topia not only designed and manufactured the press molds but also pressed and welded the parts in house. Using the press simulation and 3D measurement, the company enabled to form high-tensile steel plates into parts with high precision.

After the press molding, those parts are trimmed by 3D laser processing, and the body-in-white is manufactured by MIG welding, spot welding and self pierce riveting.
ABS resin parts were manufactured by Stratasys Inc's RP system. Topia has reportedly introduced two units of this RP system (including a 3D printer), and selectively used them according to the part size and the required precision. Topia also decided to introduce "FDM 900mc," Stratasys' large RP system released in April 2008, and will be the first FDM 900mc user in Japan, the company said.
