Don't worry about springing a leak. Dalawa lang naman ang connection ng a/c evaporator sa a/c system plumbing. Both are hard lines with rubber gaskets.

jayeina,
Check if your vehicle uses R12 or R134a

Yung corolla ko dati nasingitan ko ng s/s screen before the blower which somehow trapped dust before going to the evaporator. Cleaned the screen monthly kahit hirap tanggalin. This way, di ako nag-release ng freon.
Is cleaning the aircon necessary? I believe the answer to that is YES. The frequency all depends on how keen the owner/user is in minimizing the dirt accumulation sa evaporator & condenser. Correct me if I'm wrong pero I believe dirt will also be the cause of the leak sa evaporator coils when it eventually reacts chemically with the metal.
Thanks.
