An unused visa is also indicative that you are wasting the Visa quota limit given to each country by the US Embassy. They would prefer people who would at least have used their visas for business/tourist purposes because it would generate earnings for the US economy.
Just need the supporting documents IMHO and just answer the questions honestly as possible. A big plus if you have fixed assets. BTW most of the time Multiple Entries will not be given when not asked for. I advised a several friends to insist on M.E., they were given no sweat.

I think its a combination of both tangible and intangible factors. I'm sure they have some indicators that will raise red flags and some plus points. The interview is just to feel out or check if what's being claimed corresponds to the general appearance and demeanor of the applicant.
All things considered, just be honest and be yourself. So relax lang but not too relaxed. Give straightforward answers but don't be blunt. And just think that if you're rejected, so what?

when i applied for visa last feb may nakasabay akong lady siguro on her early 60's. i overheard (i was next to her) that her daughter a nurse in the u.s. was inviting her for a visit. all expenses would be shouldered by her daugther, but still the consul denied her visa application.
may nagkwento sa mga nakapila that there was a previous applicant with the same case though it was the father. he could not speak english so he requested for an interpreter. the consul asked the applicant thru the interpreter why he wanted to go to the u.s. since he could not even understand english. the old man replied "e kayo nga naririto sa pilipinas di kayo marunong ng tagalog e". he got his visa.

punta ka sa website ng us embassy tapos fill up ka form ds-506 ata o 206... computer printout na mga forms na isasubmit sa kanila... tapos bayad ka sa bpi where you'd be given another form, ds-507 ata or 207.. parang ganun...
tapos log ka online dun sa scheduler nila, bayad ka online ng schedule fee using a credit card...
that said, just visit the website of the us embassy...
by the way, i tried to renew my visa just this month... third renewal ko na sana, di ako binigyan.. wala ata sa mood yung consul tinanong lang ako kung san ako sa US punta... try ko na lang daw ulit next time...
oh well...

APPLICATION FORMS – Both completed application forms (DS-156 & DS-157) are needed for each person, regardless of age. All questions must be filled out with a high level of accuracy. Errors and incomplete information may result in a visa processing delay.
a)DS-156 Form – Starting 01 November 2006, handwritten or typed Visa Application DS-156 Forms will no longer be accepted. Visa application forms printed from the Internet and then filled out by hand or typed on a typewriter will not be accepted. Please fill out the form online, and then print it out using a laser printer. The printout will be three pages in length and include the two-dimensional barcode page. Make sure that the barcode is printed clearly and completely, with no lines broken or torn. Only use laser jet or inkjet printers and good quality copy paper when printing the online DS-156 Form.
Please recheck the completed form to ensure its accuracy. If you must make changes, please fill out another one. Please click here for additional instructions.
b)DS-157Form – Applicants should also complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Supplemental Application DS-157 Form. The form is provided at the bank where fees are paid. Applicants must ensure that the back of the DS-157 Form is machine-validated with check-rite. The U.S. Embassy does not validate DS-157 Forms.
Applicants whose DS-157 Form is not machine-validated by the bank with check-rite will NOT be allowed to enter the Embassy premises. The applicant will then have to book another interview appointment. Re-bookings do not require another application fee.
