Been to Bangalore and Chennai before. Not the ideal places to go, honestly. It was strictly hotel-office-hotel for me.

Depends on which part of the city. To be fair, there are a lot of options for a safe and clean location to visit in Bangalore and Chennai, or anywhere else in India for that matter. Just like in the Philippines, there are also unsafe places for tourists and locals alike. Of course, smell is one thing but again that is part of their culture.

I have friends who go to India for work and they rub vicks or white flower (?) under their nose to mask the smell in India

The smell is really ioffensive but there are several ways to survive. Vicks or liniment is one. For me I just make sure to go out and breathe fresh air evry 30 minutes. I am not a smoker but sometimes I do it as an excuse or at least numb my olfactory sensors.
