People In Asia Are Sick Of Western ‘Begpackers’ Asking Locals To Fund Their Travels For Them

Travel is truly one of the best things that a person can do – it broadens the mind, fosters empathy with people of all races and cultures and creates memories that last a lifetime. However, travel is a luxury and a privilege that only a fraction of the world's population can afford.

So when Western people, with all the privileges we hold, are found 'begpacking' on the streets of developing countries, it can leave a sour taste. Tourism is a vital source of income in many countries; we should travel in such a way that maximizes the benefits for local people and businesses. Sponging off the kindness of strangers to further our own selfish travel goals is just not on! If you can't afford to travel, stay at home until you earn enough money to do it ethically.

Authorities in some countries have had enough, and now immigration officers on the Indonesian island of Bali have started sending these 'begpackers' to their embassies to get themselves sorted out. "We have seen many cases of problematic tourists, lately they are either Australian, British or Russian," one official said. "We tend to report these cases to the relevant embassies so that they can oversee their citizens who are on holiday."

While we don't know the context behind these pictures - some of these people might genuinely have been a victim of some misfortune - others are clearly just looking for a free ride around the world.

What do you think about this phenomenon? Have you traveled on a tight budget before? Have you ever found yourself needing help in a foreign country? Do you see a problem with this kind of 'begpacking?' Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

I technically encountered one in Osaka last April.

"technically" since she's African with a thick Southern accent.

She was asking for money since (according to her) she's on a solo trip and woke up with everything gone.

I told her to go to her embassy!

I don’t get it. May mga naloloko pa sila. I work hard for my money & mga travels ko scheduled at pinagiisipan. Tapos etong mga ito hihingi ng pera to go around the world to have fun?
Parang yung nangyari recently, I think sa Palawan. Nag try sila na makalibre sa resort, in exchange of positive reviews sa social media. Tawag sa kanila “influencers”.

I like one Thai shamed a begpacker: you came to Thailand w/ no money and no visa while we have to save up a lot of money before being granted a visa to visit your country?

    meron din iyan hehe

pero madami ako nakikkita na budget backpackers talaga. they sleep in cheap airconless hostels tapos they move around using public transpo. natatawa ako kasi hirap din talaga mag move around the country on a budget. pati iyong inter island ferry economy class pinapatos nila. iyong tipong common ang space tapos hindi pa enclosed from the elements kapag bumabagyo. mabibilib ka din sa sense of adventure nila.

tapos meron ako napanuod na european vlogger couple, they apparently fell in love w/ the country and the pinoys. they decided to move here and rent a plush condo unit in legaspi village, makati (not exactly sure) just this year. tapos ngayon meron na silang bmw mpv and bmw motorcycle. it makes you think how much they're earning from vlogging.

^^ sila yun couple na nascam ng taxi when they landed here in philippines. asensado na pala sila ngayon kaka vlog. astig.... sa tingin ko alam din ng mga puti na yan na pag nasa asia sila tingin sa kanila ng mga asian eh parang mga dyos at dami agad follower. i watch once of their live vlog meron talaga nag bibigay ng pera during the live vlogging tapos kung ano ano lang sinasabi na nonsense. hinde ko lang ma gets sa mga tao saten na ang dami ni ffollow na mga stateside na mga vloggers wala naman kwenta mga content most of it alam naman na naten.

BTT... i also see a group of white foreigners noon sa Jatujak weekend market selling their photos na ewan lang tapos nang hihingi ng funds for their travel. grabe kapal ng mukha kung yun ibang pulubi humihingi pera para mabuhay sila etong mga eto humihingi ng pera para mamasyal.. mag trabaho sila para magkapera sila, kahit mag P*t* sila at least trabaho pa din yun kesa ganyan nanlilimos. hahaha. grabe lang tapos parang normal lang sila mamalimos.

port pic here pag meron kayo nakita begpackers within pinas. hahaha.

They upload like almost daily and average of 15 minutes video, so 15 min x i8 sloggers a night, 2 hours of Youtube hihi, minsan upload pa sina will and erwann

so long tsikoteer, dinosaurs, it will be the new thing for the future, spontaneous vlogging. I've had two months headstart na, and I know all their gears, their vlogging styles and economics. ngaun may ma-oopen na naman ako 2 business sa future .

ok balik na lang ako ulet dito, pag intermission, punta lang ako dito kaki nag-aantay ako ng sundo

oo eto na lang ha, if you upload in Youtube daily and averages 30K views per day, assured ka ng Php 30K sa Youtube Monetization per month, if 60k views per night, P60K per month.

some like Jamill, Akosi Dogie, and Cong average, 300K per night kagad, kasi Jologs market eh, so they take home minimum 300K per month. wala pa in stream ads dun. Jollibee, mang inasal and other filipino companies are advertising sa kanila, mapapansin nyo dun sa yellow sa timeline , if they get 2 ads, that's additional pa sa kinikita nila

so yun binanggit nya sa itaas na Austrian couple, na may pad na sa legaspi village alveo, na kakabile lang ng BMW, I think they are monetising as much as 100K per month sa Youtube pa lang yun, pero may FB and Instagram monetisation pa sila

that's good money. keysa magbenta ka pa o magluto lol

o last tip, kung gusto nyo na mag-vlog, get a drone. coz Youtube minimum requirement for monetisation is like 12 min video. so these backpackers are utilising drones to. add more b-rolls sa uploads nila para pampahaba ng video

I'm training now for drone license kasi kelangan Mavic Air 2 Pro dapat not the spark, kasi Mavic can approach Mayon Volcano even if you are like 2 km away, and mobile-mabile and drone shots ng Mayon or teas ng batanes, Boracay, siargao etc etc..
