Depends on the gear ratios of the vehicle, but old diesels have very very low 1st and 2nd gears.

Take for example the old L300. Second gear is 2.33:1. A pajero fieldmaster (diesel) has a 1st gear ratio of 2.9:1. There's very little difference, so 2nd gear in an old L300 diesel is almost as low as 1st in a pajero, and if you keep that ratio in mind, it's perfectly safe to start in 2nd on the old van.

This is often the case with old diesels that don't have a low range transfer case. Rather than fit an expensive transfer case, what the manufacturer does is make 2nd gear equivalent to a normal 1st gear, and then make the 1st gear very very low, to act as a low range.

if you ask me, 1st gear was out there for a reson, as much as possiblt, use 1st befire you shift to 2nd gear, your gears will last longer if used properly.

    Yup.

This is the annoying misconception many people have regarding gearboxes.

It's not the "1st, 2nd, 3rd" crap that counts. It's the overall-drive reduction that really matters.

On cars like the L300, second gear is actually lower than first gear in other cars! First gear is only there for pulling heavy loads uphill. Hell, second gear on the L300 feels lower than first gear on the Vanette, which can't pull a full load of passengers up a 25 degree slope in first gear without a running start.

You can start in second if the situation allows. Which means, if you don't need to slip the clutch excessively to get off the line smoothly, by all means, USE SECOND GEAR!

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

sa Paj95 namin, 2nd gear din ako minsan, parang too short kasi talaga first gear eh, pero kapag patag o pababa lang yung daan.. kapag medyo uphill na, first gear na ako..:D at mas smooth kapag 2nd gear, for me..:D

Different engines have different ranges as regards to shifting. Gear ratios of transmission will influence these ranges. When you get to use the engine coupled to the transmission long enough you would know what it can handle based on load/weight and slope of the road. Power to weight ratio should be considered. Some vehicles might be more comfortable to launch at 2nd and some may not feeling the engine long enough will do wonders on this.

sa 4x4 you usually start sa 2nd gear pag naka low 4 ka - kahit sa manual ng land rover it is stated that you use 2nd gear pag naka low 4 ka to move the car. so what is the use of 1st gear. When you are going down steep inclines there are times it is best not to step on your brakes because you might skid and end up inverted - the best way is stay on 1st then assist with a bit of gas - then if you want to slow down - let go.

I always use 2nd gear first with my old L300 Diesel van... 1st gear only when on a steep incline, or when I am carrying heavy loads.

Minsan pag nasanay ka then it will become your habit, I used to do this when I have both diesel 4x4 pickup and diesel AUV.. until beninta ko isang car bumili ako ng compact sedan na gas, ayun namamatayan ako nung una kasi I was so used na 2nd gear ang start ko from dead stop... ngayon nasanay na ako sa auto na lagi 1st gear talaga from dead stop, kaya when I drive my pickup 1st gear na lagi...

Pero when I need a quick launch sa stop light using the pickup mas mabilis ang 2nd gear using some RPM.. you save 1 shift up.

hi, i am driving an innova j 2.5 diesel engine. since you mentioned starting at 3rd gear, i sort of experimented and tested the power of my van combined with 10W40 motor oil, powerful daw ito and a bio-diesel enhancer, direct from the inventor.

prior to these test, i was advised that the combination of the motor oil and the fuel additves will create a certain power that will allow, quick and responsive engine, increase compression, and smoother driving condition in minutes. true enough, totoo pala. so i tried to test it south bound, SLEX, without an aircon last feb.25 9:33p.m. i started in petron station, osmena hiway, a stoplight away from quirino.all documented with a video, i proceeded to slex and made a u-turn from Namplasan (LIIP) exit back to caltex station, quirino ave, cor. osmena hiway with 65.3 kms. you will be surprised that my fuel consumption is only 2.397 liters. thats 27.24 kms/liter.

now going back to the 3rd gear start (again documented with a video). the test area is in quirino ave 50 meters before the curved going to nagtahan and likewise the foot of the bridge going to sta. mesa. the objective of the test is to start the engine at 3rd gear on full stop, no acceleration will be applied up to the top of the bridge where the gear should be placed on the 5th gear before reaching the foot of the bridge.

and so, with a camera and friend doing the shoot, i shift the knob on the 3rd gear, with my right foot away from the accelerator, and rpm is constant at 750 (idle rpm), i proceeded by releasing the clutch, then at speed 15kph i shifted to 4th gear and at 25kph i shifted to 5th gear, thats before reaching the foot of the bridge both my feet away from the accelerator. there is something like an angle 25 degrees to climb, with speed of about 35kph, you notice the reduction to 30, 27, 25, 22, 20 that 20 kph speed i am just over half of my ascent and my val kept on climbing till i reached the peak.

guys, just sharing to you my experience. to date, i could easily get 16-18 kms/ltr with aircon at normal cruise on long drive.

    * dealsol - wow!

    bro,
the video will give you all the info, light to moderate up to alabang with about 65-80kph.alabang to southwoods 50-60kph, repairs on this areas. but beyond its 70-80kph up to namplasan (liip) exit which is 34 minutes and same as north bound with 33 mins. from shell station after my u-turn.

if interested i can give you all details by forwarding to your email my report on this test. just text me at 09226847474 your email address.

you know what, how nice the feeling that filling up gas for the usual P1600 to now P760 every week is indeed very fulfilling. feeling ko nga parang nakakaisa ako sa mga gas station na tumipid ang consumption ko. good decision din that i choose innova 2.5 diesel as my service van.
