    for a 4 speed Honda A/T:
    P=Park
    R=Reverse
    N=Neutral
    D4=the tranny will shift upto the final gear (overdrive)
    D3=the tranny will only shift upto 3rd gear
    D2=the tranny will only shift upto 2nd gear

    For a 4 speed Toyota A/T: w/overdrive
    P=Park
    R=Reverse
    N=Neutral
    D*=tranny will shift upto 4th gear with O/D on
    D=tranny will shift upto 3rd gear with O/D off
    2=tranny will shift upto 2nd gear
    1=tranny will always stay on 1st gear

    gaijin: how's the layout ba ng a/t? if it's P - R - N - D - 3 - 2 - L, then yup, D could be the max gear, then -1 na as it goes down (assuming you have o/d on, otherwise, another -1 for max gears possible).

    AFAIK "3" is the "third gear" or has 3 gears and '2' is the "2nd Gear" or 2 gears. Please correct me if am wrong.

    best performance = manual, i prefer a/t cos of convenient reasons, fortunately may sport mode w/c makes the car rev happy, but sport mode is also gas guzzler mode hehe

    1. Engine brake not possible
    I've driven an automatic car for less than a year and a manual car for almost 5 years, and you can definitely engine brake on an A/T vehicle.

    You are not supposed to hold your brakes going downhill! This is something every driver should know, M/T or A/T! Gusto mo ba maubusan brake pads mo at mag overheat ito? hehe... And as stated on most car manuals do not pull the hand brake while the car is moving, this can damage your axle. *yun sabi sa manual ng car namin

    2. Paano pag baha? Will you dare drive an A/T with water level sa middle door?
    errr. I wont drive even a car with M/T in that kind of flood. Logic dictates otherwise.

    D-3 in your case would be for regular driving, the engine uses all available gears. 2 would mean only 2 gears, L would be like first gear, for uphill driving and engine braking.

    Max speed per gear would vary per vehicle but its probably something like L-50kph 2-90kph D-3- top speed.

    D is fine 99% of the time, 3,2,1(L) are mostly used when driving uphill/downhill/overtaking. Some more modern A/T's downshift automatically during downhill driving.

    sir gaijin....

    wala talagang OD switch yan....either go "3" to shift down and overtake....is it 4 speed? kung 5-speed tranny,walang manula selection to 4th gear..just like the new CRV and civic 2.0 here in the phil...

    sir seahorse,

    i think the a/t engine braking is addressed na,e...

    sir kuroy,

    some what may truth yan..kasi in a manual,lesser ang mechanical loss and lesser ang chance to break the tranny...

    pero alam ko much better sa turbo ang AT kasi sabi nila di mawawala ang "boost" when shifting gears unlike in a manual..<---mga sir confirm this...

    True kung para kang jeepney driver mag shift. (yung kinakapa muna at mag double clutch pa para lang pumasok sa next gear)

    Sa matic kasi mabilis ang shifting so less drop in rpm
    Sa Manual kung mabilis ka mag shift at di aalisin ang paa sa acclerator, di naman mawawala agad ang boost pressure. negligible lang ang effect nito.
