here is a funny thing that i never research even if i managed a lot of different casas out there from korean, japanese, and european vehicles.

we always replace everything clutch disk release bearing and pressure plate.


this way no hassle for us to just replace 1 part and if there is a back job we wont need to replace the others.

so if a customer comes with sliding clutch and our technicians sentence it as replace clutch disk due to wear. everything is replaced.

we do it so that we wont have a back job and have to remove the transmission again.

Do others out there just replace the worn part? Just the clutch disk and not the whole clutch assy?

1. Any sign or symptoms on when to replace clutch?
Sliding into 5th gear, premature wear, sign that may need replacing within a week. Sliding on 4th or 3rd gear, buys those parts and hope it won't damage the flywheel. For manual trannys, while the engine is running at stand still (not the vehicle), engage in top most gear (4th or 5th), slowly release clutch pedal, if engine did not stall, time to replace.

2. What basic parts do I need to replace? How much?
Clutch disc, release bearing, pilot bearing/sleeve, pressure plate. Prices differ for each make & model.

3. To maximize cost put in labor, any other thing to replace or checked?
Flywheel damage from rivets, oil seal, transmission links if equipped, park brake lining and tension if equipped with parkbrake after tranny assembly.

1. May shudder when coming from a dead stop. You can put it in fifth gear while stopped, release the clutch and engine won't die.
2. Clutch disc. Good idea to get a new pressure plate, release bearing while you're at it.

4. Centerforce, then there's this other Japanese company I can't recall right now. Personally, you can't go wrong with OEM.

btw a squeaking sound in the clutch pedal, plus, sometimes total loss of clutch pedal resistance (e.g. the clutch pedal drops to the floor, no resistance, and can't change gears anymore) what is this? happened to me 3 times now. Pretty annoying/unnerving. But the clutch pedal worked itself back up within a few minutes, and I went on with my driving..

Yup, this brand does OEM also for some Jap cars from what i know.
ASCO is also okay when i tried it on our Corolla (but this was with a torqueless 1.3L engine)...

fcc, asco, daiken, etc are all ok naman.

replace everything pati oil seals so no need for work to be done again next time.

Additional question: any cost estimates? I know it varies from car to car but does anybody know the range of cost?

from 5-10k for everything depending on the car.

syempre, 4x4's are more expensive kasi parts are generally sturdier and labor will be more.

btw a squeaking sound in the clutch pedal, plus, sometimes total loss of clutch pedal resistance (e.g. the clutch pedal drops to the floor, no resistance, and can't change gears anymore) what is this? happened to me 3 times now. could be a leaking clutch master cylinder or the secondary. happened to me before. parang biglang lubog yung pedal tapos di na mapasok sa gear. tapos bagal ng akyat. hintayin mo pa para makagear ka uli. try checking the brake fluid level. kung nababawasan at walang problema sa preno, this must be it.

ano recommended upgrades for clutch?

if you can find uprated pressure plates and discs with material with a higher coefficient of friction better. pero depends on the car.

also prepare for stiffer pedal pressure because of the upgraded pressure plate.

pag clutch driver ka baka wala pang isang taon pudpud na clutch mo.

OEM clutch are said to last 150,000km before being replaced. pag clutch driver ka, it could cut its life to 30,000km or even less

ako nasa 50K KM palang medyo ramdam na manipis kasi pinagpractisan yun car ng dalawang newbee dati hehe...

ang estimate sakin ng toyota syempre taga...15K for the whole assembly

Mine has more than 80K++ readings ... pero di pa napapalitan ng clutch .... or any parts sa clutch.
