New AT cars won't crank the starter if you dont step on the brakes, this has been the standard safety feature and the best practice to do for starting an AT.

Some MT''s nowadays use similar safety feature, u cant crank the starter if you dont step on the clutch.

matagal na yan sa M/T yun mga korean cars circa mga kia pride, ganyan na eh...tinatapakan muna clutch before mag start...

but to answer TS's question, its doesnt make any difference...first hinde nga mag start pag wala sa P yun shifter and hinde mo rin naman maaalis yun susi pag wala sa P, so in essence automatic nasa P before mo ma starrt

depende siguro sa design ng sasakyan. for the 2013 Toyota RAV4, eto nakalagay sa owner's manual.

    Starting the engine
    1. Check that the parking brake is set.
    2. Check that the shift lever is set in P.
    3. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
    4. Turn the engine switch to the “START” position to start the engine.

pero sa Toyota Revo namin, i can start the engine without stepping on the brake pedal just as long as the shift lever is in P or N.

Depende talaga sa make ng car. Pero standard safety feature is to step on the brakes to assure the tranny is disconnected and wheels are braked - solution ng manufacturers sa mga makakalimutin.

Kahit driving school yan din ang tinuturo, limutan na ang lahat wag lang ang preno when starting and stopping the car.

The technical term is "safety interlock", wherein a certain process will not proceed until some safety features are established.

Most cars will start when the car is shifted in either Park or Neutral only.

Pag de susi, start na agad basta nsa Park position. Pero pag 'Push Start' need mo tapak sa brake.
