New AT cars won't crank the starter if you dont step on the brakes, this has been the standard safety feature and the best practice to do for starting an AT.

Some MT''s nowadays use similar safety feature, u cant crank the starter if you dont step on the clutch.

but to answer TS's question, its doesnt make any difference...first hinde nga mag start pag wala sa P yun shifter and hinde mo rin naman maaalis yun susi pag wala sa P, so in essence automatic nasa P before mo ma starrt

depende siguro sa design ng sasakyan. for the 2013 Toyota RAV4, eto nakalagay sa owner's manual.

    Starting the engine
    1. Check that the parking brake is set.
    2. Check that the shift lever is set in P.
    3. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
    4. Turn the engine switch to the “START” position to start the engine.

pero sa Toyota Revo namin, i can start the engine without stepping on the brake pedal just as long as the shift lever is in P or N.

Depende talaga sa make ng car. Pero standard safety feature is to step on the brakes to assure the tranny is disconnected and wheels are braked - solution ng manufacturers sa mga makakalimutin.

Kahit driving school yan din ang tinuturo, limutan na ang lahat wag lang ang preno when starting and stopping the car.

The technical term is "safety interlock", wherein a certain process will not proceed until some safety features are established.

Most cars will start when the car is shifted in either Park or Neutral only.

hindi mo mahugot ang susi pag nasa neutral in A/T, kailangan nasa Park talaga.

depende pa rin sa sasakyan. on our Revo, you can turn off the engine and pull out the key even at D pa lang.

    2. every saturday in addition bago mag start
2.1 open ko ung hood and visually check ko ung level ng oils, brakes, power steering fluid, water level, belts, battery terminal, and any other unusual thing or new on the engine bay.
2.2 using tyre presure gauge check ko ung presure of each tyre including reserve tyre.

    5. start na with observing the sound of the engine (for any new sound) and how long does it take to start (para happy naka AMARON na din ako )

    6. close my eyes ang pray to God for safety, include ko na din sa prayers ko ung mga drivers na makakasalubong ko sa daan :2thumbsup:
6.1 since cold start, mataas ang rev ng engine kaya need to warm up to normalize, after my prayers normalize na ung rev ng engine

    8. step on the brakes and shift to D

    9. ilabas ko na ung car sa garage at mag park just after passing our gate
9.1 put the gear in P, engage ko ung handbrake
9.2 close ko na ung window
9.3 now ko pa lang on ung blower ng aircon (AC still off)
    9.4 labas ako ng car
9.5 tignan ko ung area ng garage particularly kung saan ako nakapark kung meron ba oil, water or any fluid marks
9.6 close the gate at sakay na ako ulit sa car
9.7 now ko pa lang on ung aircon, and ung car radio

    10. enjoy the ride

ayos! detalyado. he he he. Ako, aside from above, since I have a pet dog, check ko muna sya na nasa crate, kasi kung hindi baka nasa ilalim at maipit pag umandar na. he he he. As everybody had said in general, it all depends on the make and design of the matic tranny. Majority of which, as a safety feature, is the initial P shifter position and the brake pedal depressed, handbrake engaged, before starting the engine.

    re: Manilablock's post
napaka-importante niyan... SAFETY FIRST 'ika nga.
    nice post... "WAKE UP CALL"...

there's a diiferent jungle out there... just be prepared...
the life you're protecting, may just be your own. buckle up!!!

I have owned three A/Ts of different makes and models. They won't start with their gears engaged. Kelangan paandarin mo muna.

I think nowadays, manufacturers have considered that some drivers may forget safety.
