Don't expect the refreshed Fortuner's Diesel Hybrid option to be a fuel saver. And same as the "all-new" Hilux, it retains the current ladder type chassis.

The Toyota Hilux 48V is classified as a mild-hybrid (MHEV), which is why its primary function is providing electrical assistance rather than significant fuel savings compared to a full hybrid (HEV) like a Prius.

    Torque Assist vs. Fuel Saving

The system is designed to enhance the driving characteristics of the 2.8L turbo diesel engine rather than fundamentally changing its fuel consumption:

Electric Torque Assistant: The system uses a motor-generator that provides an additional 16 hp (12 kW) of power and 65 Nm of torque. This "boost" is most active during initial acceleration and low-speed maneuvers.

Marginal Fuel Savings: Toyota claims a fuel efficiency improvement of only 5% to 10%. A large portion of this saving comes from an enhanced stop-start system that allows the engine to stay off longer during idling, rather than the electric motor driving the wheels.

No Electric-Only Mode: Unlike full hybrids, the Hilux cannot drive on battery power alone.

    Removing Turbo Lag

The "torque assistant" description directly relates to how the system addresses the traditional weaknesses of a large diesel engine

Eliminating Lag: The electric motor provides instant torque from a standstill, filling the gap before the turbocharger spools up.

Smoother Power Delivery: By providing this immediate electrical kick, the transition to full turbo boost feels more linear and responsive, especially when overtaking or navigating off-road obstacles.

Refinement: The belt-driven starter-generator allows for much quieter and faster engine restarts compared to a conventional gear-driven starter motor.
