First things first, do a general check-up and service. That would mean getting a tune-up, changing the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, brake fluid, gear oil (or ATF), and power steering fluid. Check your suspension, serpentine belt, get an alignment and have the brakes cleaned. Have the MAF sensor cleaned with electric contact cleaner just as well.

The Altis engine is also prone to sludging if the previous owner did not change it every 5,000kms so you can have the mechanic check your engine as well by opening the valve cover and doing a visual inspection.

May cost you a bit but heck, its worth the peace of mind and starting fresh with your new vehicle

Timing chain. As long as the oil is regularly changed (every 5000kms, no need for synthetic), the timing chain should also last.

Try Servitek in Kapitolyo or Auto Camp, or Petron CCC near Auto Camp/ Home Depot (Across Meralco) along Ortigas Ave. if you're just doing the regular service.

    i just got a 2003 altis E AT.
    it drives well enough.
except, i can't move the AT stick from P to R to N to D to 2 to L and vice versa, as easily as i can with my other AT. parang may kinakalawang...
i'm not new to AT, but this altis got me stumped.
what can possibly be wrong, and what can i do DIY?

You can try removing the center tunnel (the one with the handbrake and cupholders) to be able to access the shifter mechanism. Try to check if there's anything stuck, and try to grease up the shifter itself as well. Check also if any rubber bits have worn out.

I had the same case with my Mazda and solved it that way.

Try to get the specs of Shell Spirax to see if it matches with the Toyota ATF specs.

Personally i prefer the toyota fluids for the gear oil, coolant and ATF.

the car is 13 years old. naturally, may mga masisira dyan. di naman habambuhay casa maintained yan eh.
could be the starter, could be the ignition coil.

yes, i know. pero yung altis ko was like that since it was brand new.

ilang beses na binalik sa casa, they replaced the fuel pump, etc.

and then recently pinapalit ko ulit fuel pump in the talyer. nawala for awhile pero bumalik din agad...

Always been that way. This is an M/T.

You can check also your engine ground wires. When these age and deteriorate, it contributes to hard starting.

by the way, i also noticed na whenever full tank siya. bawas ang chances of hard starting, kaya most of the time full tank na lng ako...

mine sometimes needs a second try, when i start her and the fuel warning light is already on.
otherwise, one click lang. medyo mahaba lang ang click, compared to my other non-toyotas.
