    if you look at the picture in the next post.. the pcv is where the tube on the upper right hand side of the valve cover.. it's very cheap and very vital to the health of your oil.. 'yan lang ang purpose ng pcv.. to vent sludge causing contaminants back to the intake.. some even advise to put an "oil catch can".. synth or non synth pag barado na yang pcv guaranteed 100% ang sludging over a very short time..

The problem with the 10,000 kilometer change is that the fancy long-chain synthetic molecules that synthetic oils use to provide better protection break down over time. How long this takes depends on the engine tolerances and heat.

    Now heat is the biggest killer, right there. Our local traffic and hot weather increase the heat stress of the oil by lessening the cooling efficiency of the cooling system. Some people might counter... but how does a 10 degree difference in weather at 30-40 degrees make a difference in an engine running at 100 degrees? Well... where do you think the engine dumps all that heat? If the weather is hotter, the engine has a harder time getting rid of it!

    *Oh, this is also why the US and some European countries have much longer oil change intervals than us. Milder weather and less traffic.

    Now many newer engines run tighter tolerances and higher temperatures for fuel economy and emissions reasons... but apparently Toyota's engines run pretty borderline hot. Your temperature gauge may not be showing it (since it only shows coolant temperatures), but after 30 minutes in traffic, your oil is suffering, breaking down into its components and losing its ability to protect your engine from wear and tear. And as the molecules break down, sludge starts to form.

    So... changing the filter every 5000, helps reduce contaminants. But it won't restore damaged oil. If your miles are only highway miles... no problem, go 10k. But if you drive in traffic, stick with a cheaper oil and do the change every 5k.
    Exactly the same opinion I have on this issue!

    I understand there are benefits with using Fully-syn compared to Semi-syn and Mineral Oils. But I am more inclined to the more often you change the engine oil, oil filter, air filter....the better for your engine.

    I have clocked almost 20,000kms from July 2009 to July 2010 since I got my '05 Altis from my aunt. Its a mixed of home to office use from Paranaque to Makati, and weekend married man chores and mall trips and of course twice a month visit to the in-laws at Cainta........my sister also borrows my car for her hatid-sundo to school also via her driver during weekdays. So the 30+ kms combined to and from distance from Paranaque to Makati becomes times two when my sister borrows the car for her school.

    So you can see how utilized my car is. But I adhere to the 5,000kms change oil. Listed below is the cost I incur for the change oil.

    Using Fully-Syn for 10,000kms might be cheaper and have some good benefits, but it seems using Semi-syn every 5,000kms will be healthier for the engine.

    =============================

    Semi-Synthetic Oil:
    --- Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 (Blue) / Semi-Syn = Php 320 / Liter x 4 = Php 1,280 per Gal
    --- VIC Oil filter = Php 150
    --- Labor = Php 200

    Cost per 5,000 kms PMS for Semi-syn = Php 1,630

    =============================

    Fully-Synthetic Oil:
    --- Royal Purple 10w-30 / Fully-Syn = Php 550 / Liter x 4 = Php 2,200 per Gal
    --- VIC Oil filter = Php 150
    --- Labor = Php 200

    Cost per 10,000 kms PMS for Fully-Syn = Php 2,550

    Balak ko gawin na lang na every 5,000kms palit kahit full syn. VTEC LEV Full syn na oil na lang gagamitin ko na 10w40 para mas mura around 1.5k yung 1 gallon niya.

    So after reviewing the posts here in Tsikot, searching the web and youtube. I plan to use Shell Semi-Syn 10w-40 (Blue) instead....and change my oil earlier at 4,000kms instead of 5,000kms.

    Before I sold my previous car; a 1993 XE Big Body, I change its oil every 3,000kms with Toyota 20w-50 Mineral oil, mura per liter nito at Php155/liter.

    My dad also changes the oil of his 1994 Nissan Safari every 3,000kms. Better for the engine talaga ang early oil change especialy sa driving conditions dito sa PH.

    My last changed oil on my 9th gen Altis was still Nov 2009 with toyota fully synthetic. My ODO reading was then 60K km. Its almost a year already and my ODO reading right now is only 67K. I changed the oil filter when it was 65K. I regularly check the oil on the dip stick and seems to be okay. Malabnaw pa.

    What is the symptom of sludging? Is there any unusual sound on the engine? Do I need to change my oil already. Appreciate your inputs..

    The best way to check for engine sludge is to remove the engine cover.
