Hehe. Point ko lang naman there might still be substantial damage that the crash structure of cars might not be prepared for lalo na in the case of lowered guys vs the lifted guys coz they don't really test for that. Hope I don't get to see that though.

Lesson learned from this thread: stay away from buses.

Yup. No matter how big your SUV is, there's always someone at least five times bigger. Which is why I drive with one hand on the horn and the other on the flashers. I never overtake a bus without honking and flashing three times... just in case.

I think there should also be a law or study that mandates lower crash zones for high vehicles such as buses and trailers, especially at the rear. This would be to absorb the impact of lower vehicles at the proper level and prevent them from going under the larger vehicle.

As for the Fortuner in the SCTEX accident, i think the damage to the rear was significantly bad because it appeared to have been sandwhiched between two vehicles so when the bus hit it, instead of the impact energy pushing it forward, the Fortuner remained more or less stationary as it hit the car in front and absorbed most of the impact.

Can't be 100% on this but DEFENSIVE DRIVING greatly reduces the risks of accidents.

..... problema lang talaga, yung iba are not kaya madalas na nababangga ka pa rin kahit anong ingat mo magmaneho.

There's already a law mandating lower bumper height, which should be sufficient.

But, as you can see, there are vehicles that are so ridiculously low, that they go under everything. You can't give all cars bumpers that will prevent a Ferrari from going under them... that would place the solid bumper just four inches off the ground... too low to clear speed bumps.

Some simple things like observing the 3 second rule on the highway (or even more when its raining) can go a long way in preventing accidents.

Cars also nowadays can go fast without feeling fast and the highways allow people to reach such speeds. Just years ago anyone who could go over 160kph on his 1600 sedan was already a gutsy person, now when i read threads about topspeed, you see people claiming to go over 200kph on their 1300 sedans, diesel SUVs, etc. as if they do it for breakfast (like Niky does in his driveway). Its easy to go fast in a straight line but once there's an emergency and they have to do a hard brake, avoid another vehicle/object, have a tire blowout (i also observed a lot of guys spend enormous amounts for their rims, go-fast goodies, ICE and other doo-dads but always ask what's the cheapest tire they can buy)... wala nang alam and wala nang magagawa because they don't know how a car losing control handles and brakes at such speed. Its even harder with the more invincible-feeling SUVs with a high center of gravity. Just look at the NLEX or SCTEX boneyards and you'll see the gravity of the damages these SUVs get during accidents.

One thing i always admired about the late Kookie Ramirez, he personally and openly advocated practical and safe driving practices in his articles and when you speak with him personally (even in passing during casual conversations). Hopefully someone can continue this and educate more and more motorists.

i think this thread says it all..
you can have greater impact damage if your car has more MASS..
but the impact damage increases significantly if this same car has more SPEED..
and the impact would also differ if it would be lowered/highered with its bumper level..
but then in the end, safe and defensive driving is the bottomline...

Kookie was a great guy. All speed on the track, but in-control. Ride with him in a car off-track and he's smooth and unhurried. He really knew when and where speed was appropriate.

Hah... spend 100k pesos on a stereo system and then skimp and buy 2k peso tires. Great way to prioritize...
