failed overhaul

[SIZE=2]Gud day Guru's!Just want to share my experience and ask advice na din sa inyo.I had an overhaul lately of a 2e corolla 91 engine.Plan was to make a Top overhaul lang kasi busted na ang HG.I was running out of coolant, tumataas ang temp ng 3/4,and white smoke coming out of the tailpipe.When engine was dissassembled,discovered may alog na mga pistons.It was already oversized at .75mm kaya pati mga piston rings sinama na sa overhaul.thus the reason kung bakit napunta na sa general overhaul.I asked my mech.kung pwede pa yung cylinder head,told me kaya pa tumagal,though sa pag examine ko kinakain na ng minerals yun aluminum.mekanik told me ok pa raw yun block,sa tingin ko mukha okei pa no cracks sa walls on the block etc.but he never recommended any machine shop,maybe because manipis na yun Head,everything was put back,break in at idle ok,went on a drive ok,pero didnt last long because pumalya ang mga sparkplugs.checked it up again at basa sila ng oil.mekanik changed the plugs from stock to platinum and drove it,checked again voila...tuyo, normal ang burn.he told me na mahina mga plugs ko.unfortunately,may blow-by pa din kahit before the overhaul meron sya.ang natanggal lang after the overhaul is the 3/4 high temp. and the loosing ng coolant.I checked the dipstick and it was spewing smoke.I'm at loss already,just spent a considerable amount para lang mapatakbo ng maayos pero eto na naman."mawawala,bumabalik mga problema".Will I opt for a new engine na or kaya pang ma-save yun stock na engine ko?any advise?I doubt my mekanik na kahit matagal na namin kilala sya.Pasensya na sa nobela mga kaibigan at more power to our forum!

Either 4AFE ( 1.6L EFi ) or 4EFE ( 1.3L EFi ) brader. Yung 4EFE, same HP output ng 2E pero syempre mas malakas since EFi na while yung 4AFE is yung OEM ng Corolla GLi

If blacktop costs 28k, those said engines should cost you lesser. Siguro engine swap ng ganyan would just set you back at around 40k.

Ah okei po.Sabagay kung EFI tipid pa sa gas.haay buhay talaga...gastos uli....pero thats life nga po siguro.....you earn experience and knowledge naman.isang bagay na hindi mapapantayan ng pera :-/

Pero mga Guru's, pwede ko pa kaya sya gamitin as in dito sito lang pag mag grocery etc.? Medyo takot kasi ako na mapundi uli yun mga spark plugs eh.BTW, when I gave the wheel to my mekanik nun tinest na namin (this was after he changed the plugs to platinum) naku parang karerista ang driving, high rev etc.sinadya nyang itaas ang menor.Is this the reason kung bakit yung mga platinum plugs stayed dry?at kahit yun mismong oil nasusunog nya?tnx

What does he mean when he says platinum?mas malakas ba spark nun compared sa stock?Pardon my ignorance thanks

oo marami pa din, lalo na mga 8cylinders o malalaking kotse.....wala din ditong phase out system...basta papasa sa MVPI...

yung platinum tip ng sparkplugs e mas matibay yun at it will last looooonger than the normal tips sa market.....yun lang ang pagkaka-alam ko jan....

pwede pa naman siguro yung makina ng kotse mo kung di naman long drive...

Oo nga, buy a surplus engine na lang. Tapos tune-up or i-recondition mo na lang.

Better na rin yung EFI engine, maybe less problems down the line lalo since nagkakaproblema minsan ang ethanol mixed gas with carburated engines.

Buti nga sakin wala pa problema that's connected with ethanol. Been using Shell products kasi since e-10 was endorsed.

Heed the advice of mda. Go surplus na lang na EFI. Makabawi ka din sa fuel cost since sleeve and the rebore will be costly na rin dahil sa labor cost vs. straight swap ng engine. Engine sawp sabihin natin mga P30K-40K, while another overhauling would set you back P20K-25K. Tapos madali rin lang masira. Dun ka na sa magtatagal.

Thanks Guru's.The forum is such a big help.nagkakaron din ako ng piece of mind.Alam nyo mahirap talaga kapag nag iisang mekanik lang inaasahan mo.sabagay we've known the guy for quite some time na.sya nag alaga nun iba namin car.pero ewan ko siguro minsan kelangan talaga may 2nd opinion.Just like before the overhaul, nagpalit kami ng ignition coil kasi unang assesment nya kuryente raw (sumisinok ang arangkada)....when he replaced the coil with a new ballast resistor,when i started the car,medyo umusok ng konti yun ballast resistor,so sa taranta nya binalik nya uli yun lumang ballast resistor.(umayos yun takbo until the overhaul)...I went back to the auto supply and asked bakit umuusok,told me na its natural lang lalu na sa umpisa kasi since it was bnew,malulusaw yun mga coating ng varnish sa bakal ng resistor.And its supposed to get hot.OT lang pero with research sa net...it does get very hot to the point na parang stove.its job is to lessen the voltage going through the ignition coil (mga 6-8V lang raw).I tried to tell my mekanik pero he doesnt want to return the new one kasi tiwala sya dun sa luma kasi original raw yun.My point is...yes orig nga pero kung kasing edad nya yun car..eh its bound to fail na din.haaay naku...I like to install it myself na sana kaso natatakot ako when it comes to cars.kung electronic gagdgets yan kaya ko.pero when it comes to vehicles....I leave it muna sa experts.Pero say nyo po mga gurus?may effect kaya yun kaya mabilis bumigay mga sparkplugs ko?baka hindi na naggaawa nun lumang resistor i-maintain yun tamang voltage kaya pumapalya at hindi makasunog ng tama?...is it also possible na bumibigay yun bago kong ignition coil dahil lumang ballast resistor ang naka-series sa kanya?sensya na sa mahabang tanong po....

How good is your mechanic?

Meron ba siyang compression tester? This is the hose and gauge thing na kinakabit one at a time on each spark plug hole para ma test yung compression ng engine.

Your engine might be at its very limit already. BTW, is .75 the last oversize for it? Wala bang 1.00? AFAIK some brands carry this.

Changing the piston rings alone is not going to cut it. Also, baka oval na yung cylinders mo so you might have to have it checked for roundness. An oval cylinder and a round piston ring will not create a good seal pa rin.

As for the high revving mechanic, I think he's revving it high para tumaas ang compression ng engine.

I experienced this with my 90 corolla. towards the end of the life of the engine, it would misfire during idling. I would have 2 oily spark plugs. The only fix was to rev it higher so that I get higher compression so that the fuel/air mixture can be ignited. This lasted for a couple of months and eventually it was a chore to drive.

A surplus engine may be a good solution but you'll never know the real condition until you open it up.

*ppcsurfer...salamat sir. no he doesnt use any instrument in telling kung ano compression ng cylinder.And yes baka nga the reason bakit mataas sya magrevv is para macompensate yun loss compression.He even told me na wala kwenta yun stock sparkplugs.how could that be?eh before mangyari yun the car was working perfectly.He told me there is still the 1.00mm pero bihira na raw may gumagawa nun.Pero for me,I loss faith sa mekanik ko.This was the first time pumalpak ang work...sa engine pa.masakit na ulo ko, masakit pa bulsa ko.When he opened the engine nakita nya may alog piston kaya palit ng ring then nawala alog.after that diko na alam san pa sya nagkulang.He only replaced the valve seals. He didnt replace the Valve guides. nilinis lang yun valves. no machining was done.Kung sinabi lang na kelangan palit cylinder head na talaga...then I would stop the work kahit tengga sa garage para lang makaipon bumili ng bagong cylinder head.pero dineretso pa din nya work.

You don't actually get higher compression by revving it higher. The problem may be that the compression is so low that you don't get enough airflow at low revs to ensure a proper mix of fuel and air before the sparks go off. Higher revs means faster air, means a cleaner burn.

Of course... if you're getting oil along with that low compression, your engine is shot... it's probably time to say goodbye to it. Personally, I'd go with the swap to EFI. Pouring more money into the old engine has already passed the point of economic practicality.
