Texas Instruments to invest $1B in RP

MANILA, Philippines -- US-based Texas Instruments Inc., the world's biggest maker of mobile phone chips, is planning a second plant in the Philippines, costing $1 billion.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said the investment was the "single biggest investment" by a foreign firm and that the Philippines got it amid "fierce competition" from neighboring countries.

“We are thankful that Texas Instruments finally chose the Philippines. We look at this event as a sure sign that the Philippines has found its niche as one of the best investment destinations in Asia," she said.

Arroyo also said the plant would manufacture "more sophisticated" products than TI's first plant in the country. Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said it would generate about 3,000 jobs.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the plant would be located in an eight-hectare area in the Clark economic zone north of Manila. The company currently has a 25-hectare complex in Baguio City in the northern Philippines, and has been scouting for a new site in either the Philippines or China.

TI Philippines is our new bellweather in the semiconductor industry in the country.

It's a fantastic thing to know that they're investing this much in our country. Great job by our comrades in TI Baguio!!!

I just hope that the government will be more sensitive to the needs of this cutting-edge industry, which is probably the 2nd biggest employer(?), second only to CallCenters.

The officers of the semiconductor industry can only shout so much so that we do not lose our advantage, whatever is left of it, in the region. Else, we will be on the short end of the investment portfolio as plants and future expansions are transferring to our neighbors in Asia.....

Its one of the top (and honest) taxpayes in the city of Baguio. Recent economic data shows that it has gained a steady rise in profits for the past few years. Talk about good karma. Maraming silang matutulungan niyan especially with their new expansion plans...

    This is good news indeed...

Although the site will be located outside NCR, at the end of the day it will still benefit us as a nation.

It was inevitable. They are mobile phone chip manufacturers, and there are tons and tons of phones there.
