TRB eyes use of E-tap cards for tollways

    http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/business/...cards-tollways
MANILA, Philippines - The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) wants tollway operators to consider using a single electronic collection payment, such as the E-tap card, for all expressways.

"The TRB can request them but eventually the market will force them to adopt such tollway payment," said TRB executive director Edmund Reyes, Jr.

The TRB, Cavite Infrastructure Corp. and Malaysia's RTS Technology SDN on Thursday signed an agreement to use E-tap as a means of collecting toll fees.

The E-tap card is a pre-paid value smartcard that will be used on a pilot basis at the Manila-Cavite Expressway starting July 16. There will be 3,000 free E-tap cards to be given away to motorists on July 16.

Reyes said Cavite expressway is a good starting point to help the TRB consider the inter-operability of the various toll expressways.

Motorists using the E-tap card can just tap it on a card reader and it will deduct the exact fare. Reloading can be done at a toll plaza. The E-tap card is priced between P15 to P25.

"Compared to other toll operators that charged P1,700 per card, the E-tap card costs very little only. Right now the penetration rate of e-toll payment system is very low so there is a big opportunity for the market to grow. The technology embedded on this card is universal which means that other toll operators can follow suit. If and when it happens, then it would be very easy, faster, convenient to all motorists who ply the country’s expressways," Reyes said.

CIC president Andrew Deyto said E-tap cards will speed up the payment process for motorists at the tollways. The cards will initially be used on two lanes in Bacoor and two lanes in Kawit toll plazas.

"We will look at how the system will work and after two to three months we may go full blasts. We will also install dedicated E-tap lanes soon," he said.

that's good... even for SLEX and NLEX.

Last time I went to Singapore, they used scannable cards for their buses & trains. Pretty much similar to tap cards. The trip was made efficient due to that.

With this, kahit bihira ka mag-toll pwede pa rin. Kunwari kailangan mo lang toll fee for the day is 500php. Then 500php lang i-load mo. Para ka lang nagloload ng phone. Walang minimum, walang maximum. Parang timezone din.

Hope they implement this, but with proper instructions to back it up. Where to get the cards, how to load them etc. etc.

Sana meron din special lane dun sa toll booth for those who don't have a card yet. Dun nalang bibili. Hirap if all booths sell load/cards... mattraffic din.

Mabagal!...

    Tap and Go.

The principle is that it should be much quicker than the exact change lanes.

Ang tanong where do we get the cards from? And where do we load it up?

Kasi I imagine, you have to open your window,- pull out the card,- lean towards the assigned (tap) pad, tap the card on the pad, close the window, and drive....

Thinking of the same.

Whether an E-pass or tap card, what i hope for is that we can use it in all the toll ways.

And yes, having these tap cards for public transpo (bus, taxi, jeep) will be a godsend and can actually help curb colurum vehicles and increase tax collections.

True. Good points, what if mahulog pa and falls under the car.

This reminds me of the Oyster Card system they have in London, UK (and other similar systems around the world).

A point to consider for the Coastal gates is that they don't have any barriers (or they don't use them, not sure).

better yet, why not make a card that can be used to ay a lot of things.
in Japan, you can use their intelligent card (called SUICA in Kanto Area) to ride trains and buses (maybe even some taxi). you can use it in convenience stores and in vendo machine located just about in every corner.

    some people use their phones.

my atm (cash card) has this intelligent card feature but I have to manually load the card because it does not automatically load from my savings account as a safety feature.

I'll still go for the e-pass/easy trip/ec-tag technology. Hassle nga na you need to open your windows, tap it, pag minalas ka mahulog pa card mo kaya bawal ang clumsy! Meron pa dyan sira yung windows. What they need to do is incorporate all the toll fees para isang technology na lang ang kailangan mo gamitin. What sucks pa is when going south from nichols to batangas city andami mong hinto for the tolls dapat from nichols to batangas isang singilan na lang. Bahala na maghatian or magbayaran yun mga toll companies since iba ang may hawak sa slex/star toll. Same thing sa NLEX-SCTEX from balintawak dapat sa subic or la paz na ang bayad mo kung straight ang byahe mo.

Which is easier? Tapping or giving bills and coins and getting your change?

    None of the above.

Passing through is the easiest. make sure lang na may load lagi ang tag mo.
