I never understood the reason for the switch to wider, lower profile(sidewall) tires on larger rims, but generally, required cold pressure increases with them to:

    1. Maintain even contact patch across a wider tread

    2. Support the shorter sidewall to maintain rim edge above the pavement.

The increase in cold pressure is typically 1-2psi per inch increase in rim diameter.

"if formula cars benefit from them on the track, think of what it can do for me, on public roads! never mind if my top speed is but a fraction of their cruising speeds."
    heh heh.

In the States, the giant wheel thing is done for looks. Gets me into vicious arguments with fellow Yanks, as I never do anything where the rubber meets the road for 'looks'.

And I do understand a few things about narrow vs wide tires that most folks don't realize.
