Guys,

It doesn't.
Bigger tire = more unsprung weight
Bigger tire = more revolution per turn for the crank/axle
Bigger tire = more contact patch resulting to more resistance in initial roll.
All points to No, it doesn't.
What it does is increase the contact patch of the tire to the road resulting to better grip and handling.
does that mean slower acceleration and speeds too?? Read also that wider tires means less grip on wet roads? thanks for any info.
having bigger tires (i.e. as in wider) is likened to having a bigger footprint thus more friction against the road which means better grip. this translates to better control but the trade off is usually worse mileage as the engine has to work more in order to off-set the increased friction between the tire & the road. on the other hand, having bigger tires (i.e. as in thicker) is likened to having more cushion between the cars body & the road translating to a more supple ride, granting a normal tire psi. the trade off however, is also like having a wider tire.![]()
so no gain on antyhing ha, except grip/handling...and looks pro'ly..thanks guys..thanks theveed!

I think for powerful cars it can help in acceleration(less wheel spin) and braking because of the larger footprint/contact patch.Originally Posted by city
For weaker cars, it can just make the car less aerodynamic, slightly slower and probably slightly less fuel efficient.

Well, for more powerful cars, their wide tires are pretty much "stock" for them, kung baga, minimum requirement to get the power transferred as opposed to aftermarket upgrades wherein the stock 195 to 215 tires are more than sufficient.
you won't benefit in terms of speed and power though handling may improve.
but certainly pogi points would benefit...
One thing worth mentioning is that if you go for the really bigger tires, they can throw off the speedometer. I'm concerned too because I want to replace the 16" tires of my 06 Sonata with 20" low profiles.
I do need more grip, that 3.3L V6 is making me spin the front tires way too often.
All you have to do is upgrade to a tire with a similar diameter to the stock tires. Maybe 20's are too much, here are some 19's, 18's and 17's with similar diameters.Originally Posted by Jun aka Pekto

215/60R16 = 26.16 inches
17's
225/50R17 = 25.86 inches (standard on high end Sonatas)
18's
225/45R18 = 25.97 inches
235/45R18 = 26.3 inches
19's...
225/40R19 = 26.09 inches
245/35R19 = 25.75 inches

When upgrading wheel/tires, you should use your STOCK wheel/tire as a reference.
kung ang STOCK tires mo is 205/65-16:
your 20" wheel should have a tire of 225/35-20 so your speedometer is only OFF by 1.1% (speedometer 60mph, but your real speed is 59.3mph)
kung STOCK tires mo naman is 225/60-16:
your 20" wheel should have a tire of 235/35-20 so your speedometer is only OFF by 0.6% too fast. (speedometer reads 60 but your real speed is 59.7mp)
Kung tama ang PLUS SIZING na ginamit mo, you shouldnt have to worry too much.

I might.
I'd much prefer to go for broader grip coverage, hence bigger low-profiles. Plus like boyscout said, the pogi factor plays a big part too. I'll take a picture of the Sonata with 20 inchers at the dealership where I got my Sonata from.
That was my first thought as well. But, the 06 Sonata has so much room in the wheel wells that my 16" tires would leave too much of a gap even if the car was lowered to the lowest point. Personally, I think the 06 Sonata was designed for 17" or 18" tires as standard. All you have to do is upgrade to a tire with a similar diameter to the stock tires
While driving one day, I was supposedly during 55 mph. But, the readout from a police radar checkpoint showed only 53 mph. My wife chose the smaller tires because they gave the most comfortable ride. But, their cornering grip isn't really ideal (I found that out while tailing an SVT Focus).
But you're right about the basics. I'd need 20" rims with low-profiles to match the diameter of 17" tires.
you want the best of both worlds? invest ka na rin sa lighter wheels if you're getting wider tires. bawi yung gain mo sa weight ng tires, and you'll have better grip, handling and of course looks.![]()

Sarap nga sana..... I just had a thought....Hmmm. If I got bigger tires which will improve the driveability of the 06 Sonata, my wife might start driving it more. Then I'll be stuck with the old Ford Contour.... Kailangang pagisipan ko nga muna.....mayroon GAIN ..... 2,000 POGI POINTS!!!
Add: Masarap i-drive yung Contour because of its sports suspension. Wala nga lang torque dahil sa maliit na V6.
