2018 Subaru XV Non-casa PMS

Since my 2018 Subaru XV is now out of warranty, where is the bets place to have it maintained? Obviously, I will not go with the casa anymore as they're way overpriced for the services they offer. I still have engine oil to use. What else do I need to buy and prepare before having it serviced outside? And can I get away with every 10K Km PMS interval instead of the suggested every 5K Km by Subaru themselves?

Where you located sir? What’s the odometer reading of your XV?

For starters, you would surely need FS oil (preferably 0w20 viscosity as required by the FB20 engine). You can use 5w30 also. Check Lazada for Amsoil FS oils. You would also need an oil filter and cabin filter.

I just do one change oil every 12 months since 2018 as I don’t go over 10k km in 12 months.

I'm from Taguig. The odometer reading is around 39.5K Km now. If I remember correctly, my last casa PMS was at 33K Km last June 2020. So I don't pack on kilometers a lot too, especially during this pandemic.

I use Zic X7 5W-30. I still have some leftover from before but I already bought a new 6L one for this next round of maintenance. I just replaced my cabin filter with a K&N Q2 of last year so no need to replace that. As for oil filters, which one do I need? I don't have a clue.

Ok. I guess I can follow your 12-month rule too. For other things that need replacement, should the mechanic from wherever I bring my car to be able to check those?

Bring it to FusionR in QC. You can also buy the oil filter from them. Since you’re at nearly 40k km, it would be advisable to have the CVTF changed and also the gear oil. You don’t need to do the dialysis method of CVTF change, drain and refill will do.

Regarding cabin filter, just check it. If it is still clean, you can change it next year. You can replace that on your own time.

Check the air filter if it needs replacement. You can do this also on your own time.

Have your brakes cleaned and check your pads if they need replacement. I had my front pads changed at 30k km.

How are your tires? The stock tires on my XT only lasted 36k km.

I apologize in advance. Obviously, I'm a super noob with cars and this is my first one.

1. FusionR sells CVTF and gear oil. I think they carry Mitasu and Amsoil for the CVTF. For gear oil, they carry Redline. For the usual 40k CVTF change interval, they recommend only drain and refill method which uses 6L of CVTF. For the gear oil, the front uses 1.5L while the rear needs 1L. I spent around 10k for the CVTF and gear oil change plus labor at FusionR.

You can always buy online but the price is about the same as what you will pay at FusionR.

2. FusionR sells the usual oil filter as those used in dealerships. The price is also the same, around 600. You can source online as it may be cheaper. You can also look for Amsoil or Wix oil filters that matches the requirement for the FB20 engine.

3. I haven’t used K&N filters but they say you can clean/reuse them. You can source online for JS or some other brand.

4. I change air filter every year, the same as the cabin filter. They are not that expensive anyway.

5. Check online for tips on How to gauge thread life of your tires. If the depth of the threads are nearly gone, then change your tires. Since your odometer is nearly at 40k km, it’s good to change those tires already.

Again, you need to have your brakes cleaned and change the brake pads if needed. I would recommend Brembo NAO pads. Aftermarket dealers offer them at a price lower than what the casa will charge you.

Yes, general consensus yung 40k km cycle for CVTF change. Better be conservative than suffer the fate of a tranny malfunction. For now, CVTs need to be replaced as a whole unit if it’s broken unlike the traditional AT which can be rebuilt.

Sorry for the OT, re the coolant, don't know if Subaru also has a time interval replacement schedule based on the manual, but Honda does. Do you change it if you reach the recommended time but still far off the mileage recommendation? And why?

I changed the coolant on my XT last year, around 48k actual mileage. It was 4 years into my ownership of the vehicle. As I have said, you can opt to change fluids prior to their expected change interval.

Parang oil din yan, you can change it in shorter periods. Nasa sa iyo lang yan. Mga 2k lang ginastos ko for the coolant change, kasama na labor dun. Mas mahal pa isang full tank of gas ng XT dyan.

By the way, I used Ravenol HJC FL22 coolant as it meets the Subaru requirements for their coolants.

I read about oils needing to be changed with time due to humidity, but what about coolant, which contains water? Anyway, the best reason for changing it came from Egan, in his words "Mga 2k lang ginastos ko for the coolant change, kasama na labor dun."

But how do you base your decision of wanting to change fluids before the expected change interval? This is where I'm kinda confused. Do you just go with gut feel? I know it shouldn't be rocket science but this is just my engineering mind working. If there were bases/tests that can confirm to see if one part/fluid needs to be changed then that is better but for things in cars like these I don't really know.

I had the coolant replaced on the XT last year. I used Ravenol HJC.

I didn’t replace the thermostat though. GAT Performance didn’t tell me to change it.

1) My car is in Fusion R now and I feel stupid because they saw that the Zic 5W-30 I bought was for a diesel engine. I didn't realize that the 5W-30 is different for gasoline and diesel engines. I told them that I will just have to buy the correct Zic engine oil first and just have a nearer auto service shop change the oil for me, as that is easier than the other oil changes. Or can I do it myself?

2) They told me that I already need the change the air filter but I can do that in my own time. The air filter costs P1800 from them. Is there a cheaper source locally for original Subaru air filters?

They also told me that the throttle body needs cleaning. It costs P1800 too and I had them go for it as it seems majo

Another thing they saw is that both big and small arm bushings have "malaking punit" already and they recommended to change them already. They said if I don't change them, I risk having the bushings fall down and will hear more "kalampag". Their quotes are:

Arm bushing big - 3200
Arm bushing small - 2100
Press out bushing - 1200
Labor - 1500

Is this arm bushing really major that I need to have the parts replaced ASAP? If yes, that's fine, but I was hoping to source better-priced original parts and just have Fusion R do the labor for me.

5) They do not clean brake systems. They only clean brake pads. They seem to not know what "cleaning a brake system" is. I asked MI and they told that when they clean the brakes, they clean the whole system.

6) They also told me that the brake fluids are still clean so I can opt not to have them change fluids yet, even though I was bringing a Prestone brake fluid. I said "ok". Not sure if it was the right decision?
