I’m the newbie to the Subie, and I got the new WRX. Cvt or not, I have to say it’s a stepup for me, coming from two Civics (both stick, too).
Yes, it’s a cvt, so it’s not as quick off the line as you’d like. Fun starts at 2500rpm in the “tall” Sport mode, where that flat torque curve to around 5500 accelerates the widening of your grin without much effort as you mash your way along SLEX from Sta Rosa to Makati, like I do everyday. The “shifts” are palpable. Don’t get me wrong; I would’ve gotten my hands on a manual if it was available, but when the crawl starts from Nichols to Magallanes, you’ll realize the cvt guys were on to something. I find the “close-ratio” SportSharp (using paddles) is best for the twisties. Man can this thing turn!
Just for the exercise, the car will do 9.5 to even 10 km/liter in Intelligent mode, highway/city combined. I have a semi-lead foot, so the 8 to 9 figure in Sport applies more. So far I’ve gotten it up from 120 to 180 in the time it takes you to say “Yeeeeeeeeehaaaah!” And it does go from 0 to 100 in 6 seconds. By the way, I always turn off traction control.
Yes, it has a real spare tire. Yes, there’s a flat spot after the first “shift” from a standstill, which you somehow manage/negate by mashing and keeping the throttle above 40% or so. Yes, the headlights are rather EvoX-ish. Who cares? I love it.
And yes, I got mine in black.
Somebody mentioned a manual coming this August. Pa-drive ha.
Peace.
