Close win by La Salle yesterday...
Archers thwart Tigers; Tamaraws up
By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines—De La Salle University rode the clutch shooting of James Mangahas and Badel Malabes to escape with an 85-84 squeaker over University of Santo Tomas Thursday and grab a share of second place in the 71st UAAP men's basketball competition at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Mangahas shot 14 of his 18 points in the second half while Malabes added 16 as they played superb backup roles for top star JV Casio, whose two free throws gave La Salle an 84-81 lead with 16.4 ticks remaining.
“My role players really stepped up in this particular game,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren, after his Archers won the battle between champions of the last two seasons and joined a three-way tie for second at 2-1.
Earlier, Benedict Fernandez unloaded 12 of his 16 points in the first half to set the tone for Far Eastern University’s 88-66 rout of University of the Philippines.
The Tamaraws, who also improved to 2-1 like the idle University of the East Warriors, fired a sizzling 58.1 percent from the field in the first half to coast to a 21-point lead, 52-31, at the break.
The Maroons, who absorbed their second straight lopsided loss, and the Tigers dropped to 1-2.
Mangahas hit a key double-pump shot with 47.7 ticks left for an 82-81 La Salle lead after Malabes had shattered a 77-77 tie with a triple with 1:42 remaining.
Dylan Ababou nailed an inconsequential trey for UST at the buzzer for the final tally after Maui Villanueva’s free throw off a foul by UST’s Carlos Fenequito that extended the Archers’ lead to four, 85-81 with 5.5 seconds left.
Rookie point guard Jeric Fortuna earlier missed two attempts from beyond the arc that doomed the Tigers in the last 26 seconds.
“We did a good job in defending Jervy (Cruz),” said Pumaren. “He got only five offensive rebounds. My big guys played well.”
Ababou paced the Tigers with 23 points, while Cruz posted a double-double of 20 markers and 11 boards.
Casio, who paced the Archers with 19 points, had 12 in the first half built on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field as La Salle took a 38-34 halftime advantage.
The Archers sustained the momentum in the third period with Mangahas scoring six of their first eight points to stay ahead, 46-38.
Malabes also got his offensive game going by firing eight straight points, including back-to-back triples, to put the Archers up at 56-48 late in the third quarter.

Referee’s suspension NABRO’s decision
The Philippine Star
The recommendation to suspend referee Bryan Tabañag for his lapses during the La Salle-FEU game last July 12 came from within the National Amateur Basketball Referees Organization (NABRO).
Rolando Omampo, a former referee himself and now NABRO president, called for Tabañag’s indefinite suspension that was carried out by UAAP commissioner Chito Narvasa.
"In view of the review and evaluation (of the game), the undersigned has concluded that Mr. Tabañag erred in his judgment," said Omampo in his July 14 letter to Narvasa.
Tabañag’s errant calls inside the last three minutes of the close game won by La Salle (73-62), Omampo added, "deprived FEU a fair chance to determine who the better team was."
Omampo added that NABRO, which has a pool of 24 referees working the 71st UAAP season, is "committed to uphold the integrity of the game/s as well as fair officiating."
The STAR was trying to get in touch with Tabañag, the vice president of NABRO, as of presstime. He is a certified architect who loves officiating, and has been with NABRO for 12 years now.
It was the first time Tabañag was suspended, according to his peers who requested anonymity. – Abac Cordero
