as of this time, I think, Smart Gilas is 2-1 from the competition

RP Gilas cagers stun fancied Zain of Jordan

    01/18/2010 | 05:04 PM

DUBAI — Smart Gilas of the Philippines stunned highly-favored Zain of Jordan, 85-82, for a second straight win in the 21st Dubai International Tournament at the Al Ahli Club here.

Jason Ballesteros held his ground against the taller Jordanians, who played with four American imports, including naturalized player Rasheim Wright, while the rest of the RP dribblers sizzled from the outside.

Gilas fired 11 three-pointers, five of them from Chris Tiu and three courtesy of Mac Baracael, who spearheaded the Nationals' attack for a 19-10 advantage.

Wright and Sam Daghlas conspired for Zain to keep pace but the 6-foot-7 Ballesteros scored eight straight points while battling seven-footer Aman Idais and 6-foot-10 Ashante Johnson underneath the rim to give Gilas a 61-47 lead.

“Zain is composed of players from the Jordan national team with four American imports. With the way we are playing, I believe we can be competitive with the best teams in Asia,'' said RP coach Rajko Toroman.

It marked the first time the RP team defeated Jordan in an international tournament since the 2007 Fiba-Asia Championship.

Coach Chot Reyes and his PBA-backed RP team lost to Jordan in the qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Another PBA selection mentored by Yeng Guiao lost twice to the same Jordan squad in the Jones Cup and 2009 Fiba-Asia Championship.

Gilas, which led from start to finish, continued to put on the heat with Japeth Aguilar, Mark Barroca, JVee Casio and JR Cawaling shooting splendidly from the perimeter.

Wright, Zain's leading scorer who exploded for 32 points against An Nasr the other night, sprained his left foot just a minute gone by in the fourth.

But it didn't stop the Jordanians from mounting a comeback as Daghlas nailed three triples, Ayman Idais scored on an undergoal stab and Damien Cantrell converted a put-back to keep it close, 76-79, with two minutes left.

Gilas reinforcement Jamal Sampson, who was used sparingly due to an injured left knee, finished off the Jordanians after completing a three-point play, 82-76, 48.9 second to go. - GMANews.TV

    Gilas survives rugged UAE five
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) Updated January 20, 2010 12:00 AM

–Smart Gilas Pilipinas kept its cool and poise against the rugged Al Nasr of United Arab Emirates side, pulling off an emotional 79-72 victory to sustain its momentum going into the quarterfinal round of the 21st Dubai Invitational here Monday night.

Cheered on by the Filipino OFWs at the Al Ahli Indoor Stadium, the Nationals hit the big shots down the stretch to frustrate the hosts and nail their third straight win following an opening day loss to Al Jalaa of Syria.

The undermanned Filipinos, however, had to play with guts and a big fighting heart to endure the Al Nasr’s rugged plays and a spate of bad calls.

In fact, skipper Chris Tiu ended up with a busted lip and bruises on his chest and legs while JV Casio’s was badly hurt from a wayward elbow from Khalal Msebah.

“They became desperate in the second half so they resorted to doing dirty tactics,” said Tiu. “You can see that they turned physical with a lot of holding and I was even punched and elbowed at some point in the game.”

“The referees were also protecting them but that was expected playing on their home court so we just stayed focused and did our part,” he said.
UAE was awarded 27 free throws with Al Nasr making 19 while Team RP took just seven trips to the line and made five.

But the Filipino cagers kept their composure as Tiu, Mac Baracael and Casio came through with clutch triples that kept Al Nasr at bay.

“I expected this tough game from the domestic team and I also felt we showed a great heart in this tournament in the very difficult moment,” said Smart Gilas’ Serbian coach Rajko Toroman. “We didn’t lose our cool, we were focused and we made some crucial three-point shots.

“And I think it’s very important for this young team to play this kind of game because we know domestic referees will push for the domestic team and I’m very satisfied,” he said.

The win kept Smart Gilas in second in Group B behind Al Jalaa, unbeaten in three games, and ahead of Zain Jordan, which totes a 2-1 record.

The Syrians, who beat the Jamal Sampson-less Filipinos, 90-76, last Friday, and the Jordanians, bronze medalists in the 2009 FIBA-Asia clash today (1 a.m. RP time) for the top seeding.

Team in the past. Yung team ni Kalbo (na santambak ang Fil-Ams), tinambakan pa sila sa Jones Cup ata yun? Itong all amateur Smart Gilas lang pala ang magpapataob sa kanila. Aside from Jordan sending their national team, 3 pa imports nila. Kaya medyo matinding achievement itong ginawa ng Smart Gilas.....

in their game vs the uae ball club, sampson was obviously hurting. it's a good thing this time around he just sucked up his injury and provided the much needed muscle inside the paint.

btw, kakatuwa mga kababayan natin dun. sa lakas ng support nila, panigurado nag all out iyong mga gilas para sa kanila
