No room for mistakes in playoffs, warns Agustin as Ginebra takes on Alaska

FOR coach Ato Agustin, the real test for Barangay Ginebra begins on Wednesday when the Gin Kings go for a quick knockout against the No. 8 seed Alaska Aces in their PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal match at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Gin Kings made waves in the eliminations of the season-opening conference with a retooled lineup that won 11 of 14 games and earned the the top seeding - as well as twice-to-beat advantage - in the playoffs.

Agustin, however, was the first to warn about that the one-miss-you-die nature of the playoffs, where all the gains made by Ginebra this season could get undone by one mistake or two.

    They Said It!
“Hindi kami ang mag-a-adjust. (Alaska Aces) ang mag-adjust ." - Barangay Ginebra coach Ato Agustin

Certainly, the Ginebra coach said the team can't afford to play as badly as it did in a 79-103 shellacking at the hands of Talk 'N Text at the end of its elims campaign.

“Sinasabi ko nga sa mga players ko, alam natin ang mga mistakes natin so we need to move up and we need to improve dahil kapag nagkamali ka dito (quarterfinals), delikado ka na,” said Agustin ahead of the team’s 8 p.m. match against the Aces.

The Gin Kings only need to win once to advance to the semifinals against a weary Alaska side that will be playing its third no-tomorrow game in four days, but that is easier said than done, according to the Ginebra mentor.

“Sa twice-to-beat, parang one game ahead ka lang, so first game pa lang, we need to play hard agad saka kami, kailangang gawin namin ang part namin,” he said.

“Hindi kami ang mag-a-adjust. Sila (Aces) ang mag-adjust saka kailangan ready kami.”

Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter, Ginebra’s 'Twin Towers,' will be facing Alaska’s bruising frontline duo of Sonny Thoss and Gabby Espinas for the second time this season since the Gin Kings posted a 96-89 win over the Aces on December 21.

Alaska, which is coming off a 91-94 sudden-death win over Meralco on Monday to earn the No. 8 seeding, is obviously tired and banged up - something coach Luigi Trillo did not bother to deny.

“It’s just tiring for us because we’ll be playing our third game in four days, and this (quarterfinal against Ginebra) won’t be a normal game,” said Trillo.

“One thing that can go for us is they’ve (Aces) got the feel of playing games, to us, we’re just thankful for the opportunity given to us and be able to win a close game (against Meralco)."

The youthful Alaska mentor expects the game to be physically played all throughout, though he hopes game officials will be able to make the appropriate calls.

“To me, in the playoffs, that (physicality) happens. But the physicality has to be controlled by the refs early,” said Trillo.

Alaska’s energetic small forward Calvin Abueva is a game-time decision after spraining his right ankle in the second period of Alaska’s knockout game against Meralco.

But with or without Abueva, Trillo expects the Aces to be ready to slug it out with the taller and more athletic Gin Kings.

“In the playoffs, the stakes are higher. I don’t expect the physical plays to stop,” he said. “There will be battling for positions and some elbows here and there.”

San Mig Coffee to bring in D-League standout James Mays as import for Commissioner’s Cup

One of the players that caught the fancy of San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone in last year’s NBA D-League Showcase is set to become the Mixers’ new import next conference.

James Mays, a 6-foot-9 banger who was spotted by Cone last season but didn’t play in the showcase this year, has signed on to be San Mig Coffee’s reinforcement.

“We signed him this morning,” Cone told InterAksyon.com. “He should be arriving on Friday.”

With Denzel Bowles not eligible to suit up for the Mixers in the upcoming conference as he measured taller than the 6-foot-9 limit for imports, Cone decided to turn the player he was able to scout personally.

“There’s no doubt about it we preferred to bring back Denzel, but without him being able to make the height limit for us, we have to go out and look in for somebody else, so we were able to get him (Mays),” said Cone.

According to the coach, Mays is a big guy that prefers to play on the inside.

“He plays the 4 and 5 positions,” Cone said. “He’s from Clemson University. He’s a good post up player, good passer off the post and a strong guy.”

“He didn’t play in the D-League this year, so we didn’t have to buy him out. Last year he played there. My understanding is he almost came in for Petron last year as possible replacement of (Renaldo) Balkman, but he decided to stick around and see if he can make the NBA.”

Mays played for three teams in the D-League last year. His best showing came while suiting up for Springfield where he averaged 16.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

He also played in Puerto Rico and Turkey and had a brief stint in China.

On the money ang karamihan sa top ten sa rookie draft

The only one missing is Ryan Buenafe. What is Alaska planning to do with him kaya?

Hehe, parang ganun na nga. Walang ka-diskarte diskarte si Ato, opensa man or depensa. Tawa nang tawa siguro si Tim Cone ngayon.

In fairness to Agustin, hinde talaga naka diskarte eh, paano makakaporma kung so alfrancis, non are looking over his shoulder? Sama mo pa si caguiao. "Boy sisi"

Parang meron faction a a ginebra. Veteran guards BS young bigs.

Saka sobrang bwakaw talaga ng mga so called leaders nila. Takot na takot masapawan ng mga bago.

They should pound it inside. Pag meron double kick out Sa shooters.

Tamad tamad pa ng mga so called leaders, inaasa na lang Sa towers rebounding and depensa. Complacent masyado Sa defense.

Kung ako lang coach ibabangko ko so caguiao, si tenorio lagi naman pang it laro pag Alaska kalaban. Kinain siya ng buhay ni Casio. Puro pilit mga tira.

Tama yan matalo sana sila para magising na management, veterans na tapos na era nila mag give way na sila

Since UAAP pa ung match up nila Tenorio at Casio. Composed lang si Casio sa laro nia. Nakakatawa lang si Caguioa, mas nakahabol pa Ginebra nung nakabangko siya. Sana Ma-sweep Ginebra next game para masaya! Go Aces!

I liked casio's game better. Supposedly the trade before was for Casio to go to ginebra eh tapos si tenorio balik ng petron. Then I forgot Sino dapat mapupunta Sa Alaska wala eh na-tweak ni noli eala.
