    Alaska, Air21 swap key players

MANILA, Philippines — Alaska forward Joe Devance finally got what he wanted Thursday as the management obliged to his request and was traded to Air21 for center JR Reyes.

Alaska team representative Joaqui Trillo said they are giving Devance a maximum salary but the veteran Fil-Am wanted out to seek “greener pasture.”

“We decided to let go of Joe. Well, he wanted out, despite us giving him the maximum salary,” said Trillo. “He wanted to seek greener pasture. But we wish him the best. We’re excited to get JR. he’ll be a big help to our team.”

The deal, however, will have to be approved by Commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud.

Interestingly, both Devance and Reyes started their pro careers with Rain or Shine (formerly Welcoat Paints).

This is the second time that Devance has been traded since he was selected No. 1 overall by Welcoat in 2007. The Welcoat franchise, however, dealt the 6-foot-7 Devance to Alaska in 2008 on Draft Day for then rookie Sol Mercado.

Devance was a key contributor to the Aces’ title campaign in the 2010 Fiesta Cup, and in the past two conferences – Philippine and Commissioner’s Cup – he led the statistical department after the elimination round.

He averaged almost 15 points and 10 rebounds per game in his career. Devance will join the frontline of Danny Seigle and Dorian Peña with the Express. —Waylon Galvez

The good news from Alaska is newly acquired Wesley Gonzales playing “extremely well” at practice. Gonzales recently came in from Air 21 in a trade for Elmer Espiritu.

Devance to Ginebra siguro

pero give them time aangat dina ang laro ng mga yan....lalo na pag nag-jell na ang SMB w/ their rookies.

Malaking PG an malakas sa depensa. Min sana 2-3 years bago i-trade.

Bigger deal forced Devance to seek trade? | The Philippine Star » News » Sports

At press time, Alaska and Air21 were still awaiting the approval of commissioner Chito Salud on the trade.
The speculation is that once the trade is approved, Air21 would deal Devance to the best bidders.

On the Devance-Reyes trade, talent-wise, lugi, pero salary-wise, same lang (hu-what!). Yup, Reyes was receiving max salary at Air21. Malaki kasi magpasweldo ang Welcoat/RoS, so when Air21 got him, they had to pay him max even if he was not max-quality. It was surprising that Salud did not allow it without draft pick considerations when in fact, it was Alaska who initiated the trade, not Air21. One note - Danny S. was a bit sad when he learned they were letting go of Reyes. It appears he had taken the young Reyes under his wing and was mentoring him. Ganda sana noon to have Reyes' height, attitude, and Danny S' mentoring. Alaska is really a team with a set system; I recall them in the past betting on and developing little-known Sonny Thoss (tall guy with a shooting touch) who eventually became a star and can't help but compare the current situation with Reyes.

Devance for KG? What Air21 really wanted was to get KG back, with DonDon being out to play with Gilas for most of the year.

Wesley G for Espiritu? Hopefully coach Cone can keep Wesley's ego in check...
