after acquiring Vic Manuel in exchange for Aldrich Ramos, Aces picked up RenRen on the free agent market.

    Alaska acquires gunner Ren-Ren Ritualo after release from Air 21 | InterAksyon.com | Sports5

The Alaska Aces picked up the rights to Ren-Ren Ritualo on Tuesday soon after the veteran shooting guard was released by the Air 21 Express.

Sheryl Reyes, who represents Ritualo, told InterAksyon.com about the latest development.

According to Reyes, Air 21 team executive Lito Alvarez informed the league about the release.

“Mr Alvarez already sent a memo to the PBA informing them that Ren-Ren is now an unrestricted free agent as of 10 a.m. today,” Reyes said.

According to Reyes, Alaska immediately showed interest and decided to acquire the rights of Ritualo.

“Coach Luigi Trillo has requested to meet Ren-Ren at 2:30 pm today. He’s very happy to be given a chance to play for Alaska,” said Reyes.

Ritualo is expected to add firepower to the Alaska backcourt to boost the team’s perimeter attack.

The two teams earlier completed a trade on Monday, with the Aces sending Aldrech Ramos to the Express in exchange for Vic Manuel.

Familiarity an advantage as early-bird James Mays makes PBA debut with San Mig

TWO weeks after capturing the all-Filipino title, San Mig Super Coffee returns to the court for its PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut against Globalport on Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Mixers will be parading former NBA D-League standout James Mays in their 8 p.m. match-up against the winless Batang Pier (0-2).

San Mig coach Tim Cone said the 6-foot-8 Mays has been working out with the team since late January, giving him the advantage as far as understanding the team’s patented Triangle Offense is concerned.

So far, the product of Springfield Armor is coping with the intricacies of the triangle, according to Cone, now the all-time most successful coach in PBA history.

“We like him a lot because he plays with a lot of energy, defends and can really run the floor well,” Cone said of San Mig’s import, a US-born Central African player.

Mays will be pitted against comebacking import Evan Brock, who averages 24.5 points and 18.5 rebounds for the Batang Pier in their first two games this conference.

Globalport coach Pido Jarencio, however, is having a rough welcome in his first conference with the team, losing his first two games against Air21 and defending champion Alaska.

Fil-Am forward Jay Washington said it will probably take some time for the team to get used to playing under Jarencio, who succeeded interim coach Ritchie Ticozn during the conference break.

“I think with the guys, there’s confusion on what’s supposed to be as a team, so on the help side, we’re still trying to get everybody on the same page,” said the 6-foot-7 Washington, who scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the team’s loss against Alaska.

But the two-time Best Player of the Conference is hopeful that everyone, including newly-acquired guard Alex Cabagnot, could settle down soon given the short tournament format in the mid-season tournament.

Cabagnot averaged 8.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 8.5 assists during his first two games in a Globalport uniform. He was traded to the Batang Pier in exchange for Sol Mercado, who was shipped to the San Miguel Beermen during the conference break.

Former Tanduay import Rob Williams dies of heart failure aged 52

FORMER PBA import Rob Williams passed away on Monday in Houston (Tuesday, Manila time) due to congestive heart failure, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle. He was 52.

“There's a lot of hurt,” Rob Williams’ brother Ed told the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte.

“There's a lot of pain, but there's consolation in knowing Rob is in a real peaceful place. There is no suffering now. I know he's with God right now.”

Williams suited up for University of Houston from 1979 to 1982 and had short stints in the NBA.

But Williams will be best remembered by Filipino basketball fans as the import who led Tanduay to its first-ever PBA championship in the 1986 Reinforced Conference when he teamed up with import Andre McCoy to beat Great Taste Coffee in six games.

Williams, best known for his wicked crossover move and his pinpoint outside shooting, won the Best Import award in that same Reinforced Conference.

Ramon Fernandez, who won the MVP that year, was also part of that 1986 Tanduay team along with Freddie Hubalde, JB Yango, and Padim Israel among others.

Williams returned to Tanduay the following conference but the Rhum Makers fell short of a Grand Slam, missing the finals of the Open Conference.

Ely Capacio, who was also part of the Tanduay squad that year, also recently passed away due to a massive stroke.

Top All-Stars vote-getter Slaughter deflects credit, says Yap, Caguioa still league's most popular players

BASED on the last PBA All Star balloting, Barangay Ginebra rookie Gregory Slaughter is now the league’s most popular cager.

But the soft-spoken Cebuano big man is quick to deflect the credit.

“I wouldn’t say that (I'm the most popular now). That’s just 60,000 votes. The PBA has millions and millions of fans. So, I wouldn’t go as far as that,” said Slaughter, a day after topping the balloting for the All-Star team that will face Gilas Pilipinas in the mid-season showpiece in the first week of April.

“But the mere fact that the fans voted for me, I am very thankful of that.”

Asked who he thinks are the most popular players today, the top pick overall of this season's rookie draft, without batting an eyelash, pointed to two players who he said are still the faces of the league.

“For me the top two most popular players are my teammate Mark (Caguioa) and James Yap,” he said.

And does he see himself being in the same level as the two league superstars one day? “I try not to look into things like that. My main concern is to play basketball,” said the Fil-foreign center.

But another former star big man of Ginebra, Marlou Aquino, believes the All-Star appearance will be the first of many for Slaughter - so long as he continues to improve his craft.

“I’m sure ganun mangyayari dyan, lagi siya sa All Stars. Permanent fixture kumbaga. Dapat lang maging consistent siya sa games niya. Kung double-double siya, dapat tuloy-tuloy yun,” said Aquino.

Aquino, a member of Robert Jaworski's fabled Ginebra teams in the nineties, said he is the least surprised that Ginebra players Slaughter, Chris Ellis, and Mac Baracael get the most votes in fans' balloting.

“Hindi na ko nagulat kasi maganda ang laro ng Ginebra ngayon. Basta maganda pinakita ng Ginebra, (auto)matic na All Star ang mga key players. Parang seeded na ang mga 'yan,” said Aquino, now retired and currently a member of the Adamson Falcons coaching staff.

Even if you include Gilas Pilipinas players in the balloting, Aquino said Ginebra player would still land most of the places in the starting five.

“Baka nga na sweep pa nila yung lima eh. Pero tingin ko mga apat, kasi yung James Yap solid boto nun eh. Yung Mark Barroca at LA Tenorio, malamang nagematehan yun sa point guard spot,” said Aquino, who added he also admires the game of another big man in San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo.

Walandyo, nagpalit pa sila, wala pala depensa. Buti pa si Boone, malakas sa ilalim, hindi sana naka-porma si Howell. Inararo lang sila kagabi eh. Ilang points nun, 40 ata tapos 20 rebounds. Pati si Kraken wala nagawa.

Bumabawi na TnT ah. Nayari sila last conference eh.

GlobalPort trading Rico Villanueva to Air21 for Carlo Sharma, Ronnie Matias

GLOBALPORT just couldn’t resist the lure of further upgrading its roster as it set to ship veteran big man Enrico Villanueva to Air21 in exchange for backup center Carlo Sharma and rugged forward Ronnie Matias.

The trade comes in the heels of owner Mikee Romero’s earlier vow not to tinker the current lineup of the team after consummating an earlier trade that dealt Sol Mercado to San Miguel, while acquiring in return guards Alex Cabagnot and Bonbon Custodio during the conference break.

The Batang Pier likewise named Pido Jarencio as their head coach in lieu of interim mentor Richie Ticzon.

Sources from both teams said the trade already had the blessings of their respective officials and is now just awaiting the formal approval of league commissioner Chito Salud.

“Pumayag na si boss Lito sa trade, pinirmahan na niya. Hinihintay na lang naman ang approval ng PBA,” said the Air21 source, who requested not to be named as he is not authorized to officially announce the deal.

Matias, a known blue-collar worker, could easily suit the style of Jarencio at Globalport, while Sharma is expected to provide added ceiling for the team that continues to miss the services of team captain Eric Menk due to a hamstring injury.

A former University of Manila stalwart, Matias was acquired by the Express from Rain or Shine and suited up for the team during the Philippine Cup this season, but played sparingly after arriving late in the conference.

Matias still saw action for the Express’ game against Barako Bull Energy on Friday.

The 6-foot-6 Villanueva, once healthy, can provide the needed inside presence for the Express, who have been relying heavily on 41-year-old Asi Taulava this season.

Villanueva, a one-time Best Player of the Conference, played just one game for the Batang Pier during the Philippine Cup after having knee problems since tearing his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) during the 2012-13 season.
