TV5 to broadcast PBA games; Barako sale to Air 21 approved
There will be a new broadcast partner and a new team joining the Philippine Basketball Association for the 37th season.
In a board meeting on Friday, the PBA Board of Governors accepted a five-year, multi-million peso offer from TV5 for the rights to broadcast the league's games.
The board also approved the proposal of Barako Bull to sell its franchise to the Lina Group of Companies, which owns Air 21.
These developments were confirmed by PBA commissioner Chito Salud.
"I am happy to announce that TV5 will be our new partner not just in the broadcast of the PBA games for the 37th season, but also as our marketing partner," Salud said.
The second generation commissioner said the games will be broadcast on AKTV, TV5's sports block on IBC-13 that airs major sports events. The deal also includes radio broadcast rights of PBA games.
"We are very happy to have the PBA," said Vitto Lazatin, sports manager of TV5. "We really wanted a very strong property like the PBA to be part of AKTV, and now we got it."
Salud, meanwhile, refused to reveal further details of the deal.
"The terms of the contract is still being finalized and we can only announce the terms after finalizing it," he explained. "The good thing, however, is that the offer has been accepted and TV5 and the PBA are now official partners."
Second Lina team
Meanwhile, the Lina Group of Companies will have a second team in the PBA following board approval of its purchase of the Barako Bull franchise.
But Salud said that the group has yet to name the brand that will be carried by the new PBA team.
"It has to be owned 33% by the Lina Group of Companies," said Salud.
The Lina Group will be the third group with at least two squads in the PBA. San Miguel Corporation owns Petron Blaze, B-MEG and Ginebra while the PLDT group of runs the Talk 'N Text and Meralco franchises.
