    Will this be the next Pacman fight? Who's your bet?
    Manny Pacquiao okays talks for fight with Cotto
    06/15/2009 | 06:06 PM

    MANILA, Philippines – Puerto Rican welterweight champ Miguel Cotto appears to be the front-runner in the Manny Pacquiao derby.

    According to Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who incidentally promotes both fighters, Pacquiao himself has instructed him to start the ball rolling on talks for a possible showdown with Cotto later this year.

    “Manny told me, ‘Go ahead, make that fight.’ So it will go Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Vegas," Arum was quoted Monday in an article by Examiner.com’s Michael Marley.

    The Filipino ring icon was at ringside with Arum when Cotto beat Joshua Clottey via split decision to retain his 147-lb strap, scouting a potential opponent while lending support to Rodel Mayol in his unsuccessful bid against WBO light-flyweight champ Ivan Calderon.

    Although Cotto had earlier said he would not go below 147-lbs to meet IBO light-welterweight boss Pacquiao at a catch weight, Arum said the Puerto Rican might relent in the long run.

    “Miguel is delighted to get a fight against Manny, trust me. Miguel very much wants this fight. It will be a sensational fight the way they attack," Arum stated.

    Cotto’s cut at the left eyebrow area, which he suffered in the Clottey fight, would not pose a problem on the projected November 14 card, Arum insisted. “It’s not that bad," he said.

    The Top Rank boss added that the Pacman likes the idea of fighting against an opponent with a solid fanbase like Cotto.

    “He was impressed by Cotto’s fan support and told me it reminded him of how the British fans stand with Ricky Hatton," Arum said.

    Cotto is just one of the marquee names that have surfaced as the next rival of Pacquiao after his two-round annihilation of Hatton. The star-studded roster includes comebacking Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Sugar Shane Mosley, Edwin Valero, Michael Katsidis and Antonio Margarito.

    Mayweather and Marquez were supposed to duke it out on July 18, a fight that also interests Pacquiao, but the bout was postponed due to Mayweather’s injury.

    And with the Mayweather-Marquez gig to be held on a later (still-unscheduled) date, “Money Mayweather" would likely be not ready for a November fight with the “Pacman."

    The idea of bumping off Marquez in the Mayweather schedule in order to tangle with Pacquiao right away is also not on the agenda right now, Arum insisted.

    “No, none, nothing along those lines," Arum said when asked about being approached by the Mayweather camp for an immediate Pacquiao-Mayweather bout by Examiner.com. “No such indication at all from anybody."

    Pacquiao had earlier declared his readiness to take on anybody, as long as they agree on the terms of the fight, including purse split and a catch weight for the natural welterweights like Cotto. - GMANews.TV

    Cotto is a damage good...hyped lang ni Arum na match sila ni Pacman, gusto lang ni Arum na sa kanya lahat ng kita since both figthers are under him....

    he's just boosting Pacman's stocks...and cotto will be another sacrificial lamb for Pacman for an eventual farewell fight with Mayweather....

    sinabi na rin niya dati na "worthy" opponent si David Diaz...

    kung gusto talaga niya ng laban na maganda, they should fight Shane Mosely the guy is willing to accept all the terms na gusto ng Pacman camp....

    mukhang ayaw nila at papatandain muna nila ng konti si Mosley before labanan...

    Cotto-Bobby Pacquiao dead-even fight

    PROMOTER cum lauded Bob Arum, no doubt, has the highest respect for world boxing pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

    But Arum will have to elaborate on what he honestly thinks of Pacquiao as a fighter following his latest pronouncement.

    Arum made a shocking claim in New York on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) which sent many Pacquiao diehards wondering what the revered promoter was up to.

    * * *

    Arum was only kidding?

    “He (Cotto) and Pacquiao is a dead-even fight,” Arum was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

    Maybe Arum thought nobody was listening when he made that lofty assessment of Cotto, who’s also under contract with Top Rank.

    Problem is the whole world heard what Arum claimed he thought of both Pacquiao and Cotto.

    * * *

    The unbelievable comment came on Sunday, after a bloodied Cotto eked out a contested split decision win over Josh Clottey of Ghana at the Madison Square Garden.

    Arum was at ringside with Pacquiao to watch the main event.

    But it’s easy to believe Pacquiao was not within hearing distance.

    * * *

    Anyway, knowing Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing icon would’ve humbly smiled off the Arum comment, if it ever reached his hears.

    Here at home, Pacquiao fanatics have every reason to feel insulted.

    Of course, Filipino fans, who Arum claims he truly adores, are not expected to raise hell.

    But these same fans will not hesitate to tell Arum that Pacquiao deserves a worthier opponent.

    * * *

    It’s like this: In displaying faded skills, Cotto, although physically bigger, visibly disqualified himself as a decent candidate for Pacquiao’s next foe.

    In fact, there followed suspicions that all Arum plans to give Pacquiao is another punching picnic, a final ring outing for the year, before the Pacman joins the 2010 political race.

    There are only very few fans who believe that Cotto will not turn into another swollen statue like David Diaz, who got stunned stiff after Pacquiao exploded with blinding fistic fireworks.

    * * *

    Now, if Arum honestly wants to enhance Pacquiao’s chances in the political ring, he should think of a worthier foe, without insulting the intelligence of Filipino fans.

    The way things appeared after Cotto’s flat-out win in New York, Arum was caught peddling silly tough steak with that cock-eyed line.

    Arum had also been suspected of trying to grow a longer nose than Pinocchio’s by Sir Michael Marley, the famous ringside wit who writes for boxingconfidential.com.

    Arum has no choice but to rethink his sales pitch.

    Unless he means Bobby Pacquiao, the Pacman’s luckless younger brother, is pretty even with the faded Cotto.

    maganda talaga opposite promoter ang makalaban like yung mga taga golden boy. yun ang talagang boxing. kaya nga naghahamon si mosley dahil gusto maka ganti, even si chavez jr diba naghahamon din?

    even before kaya gusto kunin ni golden boy si manny para gumawa ng pera, diba naka pirma na siya binawi lang? pare parehas lang mga promoter, yan ang namana nila kay don king.
