*arb, the best way to get into mtbiking is hitting the trails, i bet once your tires taste dirt you'll be hooked!
actually you just have 2 choices sa drivetrain, shimano or sram. if you get a shimano shifter or derailleur then go shimano all the way, dont go for 8 speed. all drivetrains now are 9 speed. yung 10 speed sa roadbike lang yun.
sa hubs naman there are only two types you should worry about and these are how the rotors are fit: centerlock-for shimano rotors only; and the standard 6 bolt hubs-can fit rotors from avid, hope, magura etc . yung centerlock medyo bago lang yan, old shimano rotors still use the standard 6bolt pattern
but you have to match number of holes sa rims. a 32hole rim can fit a 36hole hub tru lacing of the spokes but a 36hole rim cant be fitted to a 32hole hub, of course 32-32 and 36-36 hole rim-hub pattern is the best
for the front shocks/fork naman, most forks are now using post mounts, meaning you dont need adaptors to fit diskbrake calipers into them, and besides, if you buy a diskbrake kasama naman adaptor dun unless if you change to a different sized rotor from the one supplied, you'll need a diff adaptor.
wildthing is right, get the right size for the frame, ask the bike shop what size will be right for you.
here are my tips if you're on a budget:
1. get a hardtail. with all the advances in full suspension, nothing will still beat a hardtail when it comes to versatility. it'll be easier to maintain, light and of course cheap
2. if you dont know what groupset to get, go shimano DEORE all the way, except for the brake system.
3. for me, the best cheap mechanical diskbrakes are still avid bb7s. go for the 6in rotors
4. buy a helmet and a pair of biking gloves

For beginners, it's better if you could source used but good non-entry level parts.
