Or are they?

People aren't conditioned, they are enticed to buy the products. We still have a choice, even if we're enticed it's up to us to control the urge. We've probably all have tasted Coke and can easily recall it's flavor just from memory.

Look at the latest Coke commercials, they cater to the emotions (family gathering, bring the Coke para masaya, etc) kasi emotions ang weakness ng tao. This is more important sa mga bata kasi they're still learning and haven't established a good foundation yet.

Bottled tea probably has the same caffeine content but with no or less sugar content (I'm not sure on that but I think so). Both will stain the teeth in the long run and both are addictive (caffeine). I guess it's also the addictive part that gets us to buy more when we see the ads. Like I said, emotions are our weakness...

Don't give in to the Dark Side...

They have this TV ad airing right now; it enumerates various ways to healthy living, such as eating right, being physically active, getting enough sleep.

The last line reminds the viewer to "drink what makes you happy", then shows the Coca-Cola logo. It's obviously meant as a subliminal message, falsely associating the beverage with nutrition and health.

Same here and ayaw ko lasa ng coke lalo na pag naiwan na sa bibig. Yes it has high level of sugar, not good for the body especially to those who come from a family with history of diabetes.

Well it appears that we all understand that softdrinks as well as fastfood and cig advertising is created in such a way to "entice" people. It seems unfair but that is that way for now. While we have a choice, how do we as individuals hope to level the playing field? Discussion forums are one way. Maybe placing it in your blog. emailing others. What can we do to help educate kaya? Or do we just say as long as we know that is important for now.

Well, how do we "fight" the big company propaganda machine? Or are they their own worst enemy? Since the beginning of time it has always been about perception rather than reality. It explains why so many old wives tales abound. That is how the big corps operate. They create perceptions of "lifestyles" they make us want to be a part of. Playing emotions.

I havent read any scientific study that links coke to obesity. However, I've read on a popular health magazine, that HFCS(Hi fructose corn syrup) which is a popular substance in beverages similar to soft drink, could lead to obesity. although there is no proven scientific study, yet. because HFCS is a cheap 'sweetening' alternative, overconsumption will have the same adverse effects as overconsumption of natural sugars - diabetes, obesity, etc.

well in my opinion, if you're not sure what the chemical does dont drink it.
the best drink pa rin is natural pure H-2-0

    im a coke addict! hehe
healthy? um cant tell. drink moderately ika nga.
it's up to you naman if you'll patronize it as well as other products that dont care much about health safety.

tulad nalang nun sa mga yosi. if you don't like it cause it's dangerous to your health, dont bother to smoke one. di naman tayo hinohold-up para bilhin producto nila. we have free will to choose and moderate it's usage.

yup, its a matter of choice. i guess we'd have to be more informative in making choices.

Yun nga lang at first, esp as a child back then, I did'nt know about soft drinks and the HFCS, and how excessive sugar intake leads to obesity esp when you grow old and metabolism slows down haha. all I knew was how tempting the crisp sound was after opening a bottle of coke and how it quenches your thirst hehe. parang ang sarap inumin based sa mga commercials. I remember a time, after a basketball game, coke litro yun iniinum ko hehehe. not coke in can.

Now, everytime I pick up something at the grocery tinitignan ko talaga yun ingredients and look for key acronyms like MSG, HFCS etc

May caffeine din ang Coke di ba? Hirap akong matulog pag uminom ako ng Coke before bedtime.

And also, remember the cola test on the Mythbusters? Yung coin nalinis, ibinabad using cola (ano ba ginamit du'n, Coke o Pepsi?).

Yes, we adults have a choice. we know how to choose.

But children dont know how to choose. Their minds soak up all the 24/7 advertising bombardment out there and it sticks.

Just observe the power of Jollibee over children. It's amazing.

I checked out wikipedia for HFCS(un controversial ingredient sa soft drinks). 100% natural pala yun 7-Up, switch na lang sa 7-Up and Snapple instead of Coke

    -------------------------
    Labeling as "natural"
In May 2006, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) threatened to file a lawsuit against Cadbury Schweppes for labeling 7 Up as "All Natural", despite containing high fructose corn syrup. While the FDA has no definition of "natural", CSPI claims that HFCS is not a “natural” ingredient due to the high level of processing and the use of at least one genetically modifed (GMO) enzyme required to produce it.[27] On January 12, 2007, Cadbury Schweppes agreed to stop calling 7 Up "All Natural".[28] Interestingly, they now call it "100% Natural".

Snapple (another Cadbury-Schweppes brand) is well-known for being "all-natural," but most varieties contain HFCS.

Newman's Own Lemonade and Limeade is labeled as "all-natural" but also contains HFCS.

i use coke as an emergency toilet bowl cleaner, dati nag party sa bahay ng gf ko, medyo maliit house nila at madami dumating bisita, some guys pag nag jingle di shoot so may mga talsik sa seat at sahig. ginawa ko pinuslit ko isang litro na coke and sprinkled it sa bowl and floor left it for 5 mins, then rinse, ayos ang bango nga CR. hehehe

ewan kung totoo, and im not bragging about this para siraan sila. basta masarap parin ang coke!

but bottles with dead rats or cockroaches are true enough. napakaraming story na nito eh.

OT: just a public service announcement. some of you might already know this:

it's proven that drinks contained in PET bottles will surely taste much likely as the smell of the sorroundings where they are placed/stocked. plastic sips the odor (good or bad) of whatever is around it. So unclean/unsanitary sorroundings = unsatisfactory taste!

No wonder... I've always felt that "Coke in Can" tasted better than from the 500ml PET bottle. There are times that I can't stand the taste!

    Now I know why!

    ----

    Health effects of Coke:

    - can contribute to diabetes (firsthand case, here)

    - can affect blood chemistry... the electrolytes in softdrinks make it a good rehydration media (that's why people use Sprite/7UP for sick people... that, and the glucose), but in some cases, it can turn your sweat acidic.

-Uh... too much caffeine is bad for you?

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Interestingly, Coca-Cola was first marketed as a patent medicine upon its invention in the late 19th Century. It was claimed to cure a myriad of diseases, including morphine addiction, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headache, and impotence.
