iba talaga pag kadamay may laban..... pilit gusto panalunin.... eh yan nga pagluluto dahilan bakit nilalangaw gate attendance pba...

PBA admits refs at fault but stands by technical foul on Ross in free-throw confusion

A photo taken by SPIN.ph lensman Jerome Ascano shows Chris Ross was far away from the play when Chico Lanete was fouled late in SMB's game against Ginebra. Jerome Ascano

THE PBA admitted the referees may have made a mistake in awarding Chris Ross a free throw but stood by its decision to hit the San Miguel guard a technical foul late in a tumultuous game against Barangay Ginebra on Sunday night.

Ross was called for a technical foul for going to the line and taking the first of two foul shots intended for SMB teammate Chico Lanete in the final 4.5 seconds of the intense Philippine Cup match which the Kings led at that point, 98-95.

After Ross missed the shot and the error was discovered, the referees slapped a technical foul on the SMB guard which LA Tenorio converted to seal the Kings’ 100-96 come-from-behind win.

Eric Castro, put in the hot seat just weeks after being named PBA technical director by Commissioner Willie Marcial, said the referees were at fault for wrongly awarding Ross the free throw but claimed deceit was clear on the part of Ross.

"To be honest, meron siguro kaming fault dun sa mga referees namin, I won't deny it," said Castro in a hastily called post-game press conference at the Big Dome media center. "Pero again, the players know sino ang shooter talaga."

Since it was established that Ross deliberately took the free throw on behalf of the real 'designated free-throw shooter,' Castro said the league rules were clear with regards to the penalty.

Castro said a change in the PBA rule states that a ‘player who deliberately takes a place of the designated free throw shooter shall be given a delay of game warning if the free throw has not been attempted, and any succeeding similar offense shall result in a non-sportsmanlike technical foul."

“If the free throw has been attempted by the role shooter the player shall be assessed with an unsportsmanlike technical foul.”

Ross said he was in a lose-lose situation.

“I know Chico was (supposed to shoot). I was watching the whole play. Chico was there, he got fouled, and I thought Chico was going to the line,” he said. “And they walked up to me and gave me the ball So I shot the free throw.

“What else am I supposed to do? Give the ball to Chico?”

Ross was likewise puzzled on why the referees allowed him to stay in the game since the technical foul was his second for the game for an automatic ejection.

“It was bizarre, to say the least,” said the San Miguel guard.

Asked if sanctions are forthcoming if the referee involved would be found guilty of an infraction, Castro said the league will review the sequence again.

“We will discuss it,” was his curt reply.

pansin ko lang wala nang mga "Air Voyager", "Sky Walker", "Mr. Excitement" type of players ngayon? ang madami ngayon yung tipong "The Destroyer" ang dating? could this be the reason bakit mababa gate receipts ng PBA?

Ross fined P25,800, ref banned three weeks, barker not spared under Marcial law

San Miguel guard Chris Ross bears the brunt of the first penalties handed out by new PBA commissioner Willie Marcial. Jerome Ascano

THE PBA cracked the whip and punished all those involved in the endgame mess that marred the PBA Philippine Cup clash between defending champion San Miguel Beer and Barangay Ginebra.

Suspensions were slapped on the four referees who worked the game won by the Kings, 100-96, as well as members of the table officials, while San Miguel guard Chris Ross was fined a total of P25,800, including P20,000 for issuing statements 'detrimental to the league' in the aftermath of the controversy.

Referee Jerry Borja bore the brunt of the first suspensions meted under new commissioner Willie Marcial after being banned for three weeks for calling the foul on Ginebra's Sol Mercado against Chico Lanete - and later allowing Ross instead of Lanete to take the free throw.

The three other referees, namely, Noy Guevarra, Jimmy Mariano, and Mardy Montoya, were also punished for failing to spot the error and correct the situation, resulting in the chaos that marred the final 4.5 seconds of the game.

Guevarra, who as free throw administrator handed the ball to Ross during the confusion-marred sequence, crew chief Mariano, and fourth man Montoya were suspended for one week each.

Also suspended for a week were veteran book scorer Lito Mendegoria and barker Noel Zarate, who didn’t inform the referees about the error, which was only corrected after Ross had already taken his first free throw.

The barker also announced Ross' name prior to the SMB guard attempting the free throw.

Apart from the P20,000, an additional P5,800 fine was slapped on Ross for incurring two technical fouls, broken down to P2,400 for the first infraction and P3,400 for the second technical foul.

This was the second time Ross was fined in a weeks' time, He was earlier penalized for P2,600 after figuring in a verbal altercation with Alex Mallari and coach Yeng Guiao in San Miguel's 109-98 win over NLEX.

Also meted a fine worth P5,000 was TnT Katropa's Troy Rosario for incurring a landing spot infraction against Magnolia guard Paul Lee in their game last Saturday.

Lee suffered a sprain on his left ankle and didn't return to the game won by the Hotshots, 91-83.

Ateneo community should send this kid to the US immediately. Para habang bata pa ma train na ng tama.
