March 19th, 2014 11:52 AM #2434PBA set to honor 40 greatest players of its first 40 years. Who should be on list?
PLANS are afoot to honor the 40 greatest players in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) when Asia's first professional cage league celebrates its 40th anniversary next season.
League officials have confirmed that a Forty Greatest PBA Players list is being eyed to highlight its 40th anniversary celebration next season, which would be the first time the PBA will come out with such an honor since honoring the top 25 players of its first 25 years back in 2000.
The Top 40 list, once done, will be a chance for players who stood out over the past two decades to join the esteemed list - a pool of candidates that includes stars like Danny Ildefonso, Mark Caguioa, James Yap, Danny Seigle, Asi Taulava, Eric Menk, Dondon Hontiveros, and Willie Miller.
In the past, the league gathered its present and former commissioners - namely Leo Prieto, Rudy Salud, Rey Marquez, and Jun Bernardino - to pick the 25 Greatest Players.
According to PBA operations director Rickie Santos, the group decided to make former MVPs automatic selections to the esteemed list and deliberated on the rest of the choices.
Members of the 25 Greatest Players list are Johnny Abarrientos, Ato Agustin, Bogs Adornado, Francis Arnaiz, Ricky Brown, Allan Caidic, Hector Calma, Philip Cezar, Atoy Co, Jerry Codinera, Kenneth Duremdes, Bernie Fabiosa, Ramon Fernandez, Danny Florencio, Abet Guidaben, Robert Jaworski, Freddie Hubalde, Jojo Lastimosa, Lim Eng Beng, Samboy Lim, Ronnie Magsanoc, Vergel Meneses, Manny Paner, Alvin Patrimonio, and Benjie Paras.
All those players are now considered shoo-ins to the Top 40 list.
This time, the league said it plans to convene a 'council of elders' to come up with the selections, although it is still not sure if the only surviving former commissioners - namely Sonny Barrios, Noli Eala, and Marquez - will be invited to join current chief Chito Salud in the proceedings.
One man being eyed to join the selection committee is Jaworski, largely regarded as the most popular player in league history. The 'Big J,' an official said, has already been sounded off about the plan when he turned up for Game Six of the Ginebra-San Mig semifinal series in the last Philippine Cup.
The former Ginebra coach expressed his willingness to take part in the proceedings, a league official said.
If the next selection committee follows the same criteria, players like Caguioa, Yap, Taulava, lldefonso, Menk, and Miller will be seeded into the list along with fellow former MVPs Jayjay Helterbrand, Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, and Arwind Santos.
Also in the frame are now-retired players who were deemed "too young" to be considered for spots in the 25 Greatest Players list, among them Olsen Racela, Jeffrey Cariaso, Marlou Aquino, and Dennis Espino.
From that batch, only Duremdes made the Top 25 list by virtue of his MVP year in 1998.
Also expected to be given a second look are PBA greats like Bong Hawkins and Nelson Asaytono, who were both bypassed in the 25 Greatest selection.

na trade na naman pala si Villanueva..
sayang tong si Matias.. kinuha kuha nang Air 21 sa ROS i trade lang din pala..
GlobalPort trading Rico Villanueva to Air21 for Carlo Sharma, Ronnie Matias | PBA | SPIN.PH
GLOBALPORT just couldn’t resist the lure of further upgrading its roster as it set to ship veteran big man Enrico Villanueva to Air21 in exchange for backup center Carlo Sharma and rugged forward Ronnie Matias.
The trade comes in the heels of owner Mikee Romero’s earlier vow not to tinker the current lineup of the team after consummating an earlier trade that dealt Sol Mercado to San Miguel, while acquiring in return guards Alex Cabagnot and Bonbon Custodio during the conference break.
The Batang Pier likewise named Pido Jarencio as their head coach in lieu of interim mentor Richie Ticzon.
Sources from both teams said the trade already had the blessings of their respective officials and is now just awaiting the formal approval of league commissioner Chito Salud.
“Pumayag na si boss Lito sa trade, pinirmahan na niya. Hinihintay na lang naman ang approval ng PBA,” said the Air21 source, who requested not to be named as he is not authorized to officially announce the deal.
Matias, a known blue-collar worker, could easily suit the style of Jarencio at Globalport, while Sharma is expected to provide added ceiling for the team that continues to miss the services of team captain Eric Menk due to a hamstring injury.
A former University of Manila stalwart, Matias was acquired by the Express from Rain or Shine and suited up for the team during the Philippine Cup this season, but played sparingly after arriving late in the conference.
Matias still saw action for the Express’ game against Barako Bull Energy on Friday.
The 6-foot-6 Villanueva, once healthy, can provide the needed inside presence for the Express, who have been relying heavily on 41-year-old Asi Taulava this season.
Villanueva, a one-time Best Player of the Conference, played just one game for the Batang Pier during the Philippine Cup after having knee problems since tearing his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) during the 2012-13 season.

hmm.. Tanduay ba yung isa?
Three more PBA franchises? | Sports, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com
But while the PBA Board of Governors is preparing to roll out the red carpet for the new franchises, a highly-reputable source whispered that three more business groups are waiting in the wings to jump in. One group was ready to submit a letter of intent last week but the PBA reportedly said to hold off until a briefing is conducted on the terms of engagement. The interested party, involved in retail sales of a popular locally-produced consumer product, will be advised on the rules of membership, including franchise fees, terms of payment and revenue-sharing formulas for gate receipts, TV income and merchandise sales.
Another group is not a newcomer to the PBA and hopes to make a comeback. It owns a team in the PBA D-League so the connection to basketball remains strong. Once this group submits a letter of intent, the PBA Board will require a commitment of abiding by league rules among others. The group left the PBA over 10 years ago after a run-in with the Board and had to pay fines of over P10 million for going against the rules.
A third group is hedging on the timing of its entry. It is a large conglomerate with real estate interests. The likelihood is this group will join after the 2015 season so it’s in no hurry to join the bandwagon.

March 20th, 2014 10:27 AM #2439Heat, Spoelstra to host players from Philippines
MIAMI (AP) -- The State Department says it is teaming with the Miami Heat and coach Erik Spoelstra this week to host 16 players and two coaches from the Philippines, which is still dealing with the aftereffects of the typhoon that struck last fall.
Spoelstra's mother is from the Philippines. He was actively involved in fundraising efforts after that storm, which killed thousands and simply destroyed part of the country.
Plans call for Spoelstra to provide the group with basketball clinics, facility tours and pre-game interaction with current Heat players before hosting the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. Activities that promote volunteerism, teamwork, community building, and youth development are also planned.
Spoelstra served as a State Department Sports Envoy to the Philippines in 2009. The group plans to visit Washington after leaving Miami.
