Pido Jarencio eyed for GlobalPort job as owner Romero hints at coaching change

PIDO Jarencio may well finally realize his longtime dream of being a head coach in the PBA.

A few months after he led University of Santo Tomas to a second successive trip to the UAAP finals, the longtime Tigers coach Jarencio is being eyed to take over the GlobalPort job from interim coach Ritchie Ticzon.

GlobalPort team owner Mikee Romero admitted that a coaching change is imminent for his ballclub, just a day after the Batang Pier bowed out at the quarterfinal stage of the PBA Philippine Cup.

"Yes, we have a new coach coming up. We already talked to potential coaches at may napili na kami. I will announce it soon," said the flamboyant GlobalPort team owner.

However, the businessman listed by Forbes magazine as the 26th richest Filipino, refused to divulge the name of the 'chosen one' to take over from Ticzon, but gave out a hint.

"He was a former PBA player and yes, nasa UAAP siya ngayon," said Romero in between laughs.

Jarencio, a former PBA star who spent his best years with Ginebra during Sonny Jaworski's reign, was part of the Petron coaching staff as an assistant until his contract was not extended after it expired last December.

Jarencio, the sources added, already sent feelers to the officials of UST to seek a release and has put his support behind longtime assistant Estong Ballesteros.

"Nagpapaalam na raw eh. Pero ang alam ko hindi pa sila nakakapag-sara ng Globalport. Pero nakapagsabi na siya sa school (UST)," said a source.

Spin.ph, meanwhile, caught up with Jarencio on Thursday but the fiery mentor declined to give a direct answer other than say he is still with the UST Tigers at this time.

"Wala 'yun. Nasa UST pa naman ako," Jarencio said while denying any talks with GlobalPort management.

Another source told Spin.ph that Jarencio still supervised the Tigers' 6-9 a.m. practice on Thursday while UST team manager Rudy Yu said he hasn't heard of any request for release from Jarencio.

"Baka ayaw pa niya magsabi. Sa ngayon kasi, kaming mga officials ng team walang say sa isyu na 'yan. 'Yung mga school priests kasi ang magde-decide at makikipag-usap ... kami naman support lang," added Yu.

"Unang-una kasi, UST ang kausap niya (Jarencio)"
