We use OpenOffice in the office. Currently ver 2.2 for most computers but upgrading to ver 3.1 (for MS Office 2007 compatibility) ...

It's free and compatible to MS Office. It also works almost like MS Office (word, excel) so very little re-training is needed to use the applications like Write and Calc.

Biggest advantage is it lowers the software cost per computer (to be legal).

A few licensed M$ Office XP and 2007, the rest have Openoffice.org (various versions).

There's only been what, 10 respondents? I use Open Office on non-work related pc's. Plus, my kid has Neo Office which counts as Open Office. Her school uses Appleworks, though.

3 out of 10 (so far) isn't bad.

    Lack of awareness, perhaps.

In our case, once our employees realized they had no choice, they took to OpenOffice.org like kids to cotton candy.

I actually proposed only one copy of M$ Office to get more savings, but it would be me they'd always be calling to convert documents all the time (when necessary), so I pushed it up to 4 licensed copies.

As long as pirated copies of it exist, though, well, you know.

You don't need MS Office to convert documents. OpenOffice v3 can already do that for you. You can even set the default saved format to be "doc" and "xls" just to be compatible with everyone else in the world. (Look under TOOLS then OPTIONS).

Well, since it's FREE, no advertisement, promotions or whatsover by the provider (OpenOffice.org). This is only the 3rd time I read about/used this. First, from my previous company in Makati thru our IT staff; second, from an internet shop and last, here in Tsikot Forum.

No, we *did* need it, that was circa OpenOffice.org 1.1. (5 to 7 years ago?)

Also, it wasn't just for converting, it was also to be able to open advanced Excel and Powerpoint files that just wouldn't open/show properly in OOO.

    Ah... v1 series. Yup.

We started to implement it to the office computers when v2 came out.
