Using the whole suite does take up quite a bit of resources. It's not evident on my desktop computers. But on marginal ones like my Toshiba laptop with its 4200rpm SATA hard drive, moving to the lighter MS Security Essentials did help.
There is a standalone install of Symantec Antivirus (Corporate). I think that's mostly with DoD and .gov sites. I used to have that one in tandem with Spybot: Search and Destroy.
In any case, I use a combo of MS SE and Spybot: Search and Destroy with Resident/Teatimer active on this pc (among other things).
