Where can I buy a larger UPS that will run a PC for about 3 hrs?

You can modify an existing UPS (that uses a 12 volt battery) and connect it to a large car battery or deep cycle battery for longer "backup" operating time.

How is the modification done? Thanks.

The modification is simple enough. You open up the UPS and remove the original battery. With wires of the same gauge as the one used in the UPS, you extend the existing battery wires and connect them to a couple of battery clamps (for best connection). Then attach the clamps to your car battery.

Note: UPS devices use either 6 volt or 12 volt batteries. In this case, you want a UPS with a 12 volt battery.

Do note that recharging will take longer than normal. Also car batteries do not last very long if you drain too much power.

UPS devices also have a "beep" audio signal when it's operating in battery mode. You can disable this by simply removing the electronic speaker either by removing the soldering or by cutting one of the two connections to the speaker.

BTW, another alternative is to buy a portable PC like a netbook PC with a six or nine cell battery. Typically these would last four to eight hours operating on battery power.

Netbooks are not the fastest computers but they use less power than standard notebook computers.

If you can get 12V slow-drain gel batteries, the better.
