like a 5 yrs. old?
basically there are 3 gateways of light. aperture, shutter, ISO
picture a faucet filling a glass of water.
-water is light.
- faucet handle is aperture. the more you open the faucet (aperture), more water (light) will come in to the glass. the more you close the faucet, the less water (less light) will come in.
- the length of time the faucet is opened, is shutter speed. the longer (shutter speed) it is opened, means more water (light) coming in. the shorter (shutter speed) it is opened, means less water (light) coming in.
- the ISO is the size/diameter of the glass. the bigger (ISO) the glass, the more volume of water (light) the glass can accomodate, the smaller (ISO) the glass, the less volume of water (light) the glas can accomodate.
hope this helps. got this from canon tutorial.
what is the best ISO & Shutter speed level?
it really depends. if you want to freeze the action, set a faster Shutter speed 1/500 of a second or less. if you want to blur motion or if you want to capture more light (as in dark places), set a slower shutter speed 1/5 of a second or more (1 second & above) -> but you'll definitely need a tripod on these bec. it's highly affected by camera shake.
ISO 800 above best for dark places bec. of its high sensitivity to light coming into the lens. ISO 100 best for beaches, snow and 12noon light bec. it's already very bright. ISO 200 - 400 best for shade, indoor with ambient/diffused light.

acceptable quality for a billboard must be 100dpi but the pixel dimension must be equal in inches/feet to the billboard dimension.
smaller posters like tarpaulins must have a minimum of 300dpi bec. of its close proximity to our eyes.
6 megapixels will be fine for a large billboard in EDSA.

Sa manual film slr ko, I use ISO/ASA (sensitivity) 400 for majority
of indoor shots but lower 300 to 100 is also good. depende na lang
sa opening or the aperture, this way co-relation na sila with the shutter
speed.
Sa coolpix 4100 ko I just rely on the auto mode most of the time or sometimes
the sport mode produces more nicely than that of auto mode.
Fireworks setting? I tried it but only show minimal diff than the
auto settings.

Sir Kimps, very nice photos of the kids especially the ones in black and white.
I plan to get a 400D for Christmas (from me for me hehe) will this get similar results like your 300D? Sabi kasi ng friend ko magkaiba na raw ang shots.
