But the popcorn is so expensive. I would rather buy a cheap old computer, upgrade it with a network card and bigger HDD and use it as a download computer working 24/7.

Actually I did. I am currently using a Pentium 3/800 with a 250gig HDD to download my ******* stuff 24/7.

I agree that it is 'expensive'. Cost for the unit + 1TB HD is approx P11K + P5K.

However, it is more cost-effective for downloading stuffs 24/7. Plus the fact that it can play HD movies. That is what we want out of our LCD TVs when we bought them....

    Enjoy!

As what bro flakez mentioned, there is another brand e-Great. I understand that it is available at EHome in GreenHills....

*shadow, you can also use old laptops (p2-p3) you can probably get these for 3-5k each. It will save you money from electric bills. Typically 50-60w as opposed to desktops (400-500w+).

The advantage with a computer is, you can install Anti-Virus and Peer Guardian 2 (it blocks false packets which some servers feed into the ******* world to make erroneous downloads).

NAS is good, there are many types. Consumes maybe 20-30w. Make sure you get one that has an OS (usually Samba Linux). I'm not sure though if these devices have apps that can block false data but being linux, maybe.

There was a time D-Link became a craze, but lately, some users seem to be having problems with it suddenly going dead.

If you plan to build a NAS, best to use WD Green series. cheaper, cooler and quieter. Seagate's latest drives suddenly go dead too (firmware issues). More expensive and the warranty is the same as WD, 3yrs. Some WD drives have 5-year warranties though (enterprise series).
