Speaking of smartphone wars: Samsung vs. Apple again

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- An Apple study to determine whether people would buy phones to get certain Apple patented features is similar to asking people to choose a car based on its cup holders, an expert hired by Samsung testified Friday.

David Reibstein, chaired professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, on Friday refuted Apple expert John Hauser's testimony from earlier this month. Hauser, the Kirin professor of marketing at the MIT Sloan School of Management, conducted a conjoint study that determined Apple's patented features made Samsung's devices more appealing.

However, Reibstein said Hauser's study was flawed because it didn't take into account major factors such as phone brand, it generated data that couldn't be relied upon, and it led to invalid results.

"There were several [factors that drove consumers' phone purchasing decisions]," Reibstein said. "None of them included the ... patented features that are the focal point in this case."

Yung isang may edad na kasamahan ko dito 1 year na halos yung ip5 nya nung tinignan ko pure stock apps lang laman, nong tinanong ko kung bakit, yun pala hindi niya alam na pwede mag download ng apps, gamitin ang push email, facetime, etc.


Nong tinuruan ko laki ng natipid sa long distance call at tuwang tuwa kasi bukod sa tipid na ay video call pa sya unlimited.

May mga tao na bili ng bili ng mamahalin hindi naman alam gamitin to the fullest ang mga features.

MANILA, Philippines — It’s finally happening.

Following delays caused by regulatory agencies in Asia, Microsoft will conclude its acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone business on Friday, April 25.

In a statement posted on its company blog on Monday, April 21 (Tuesday in Manila), Microsoft announced the completion of the transaction that’s been several months into the making. Microsoft says the deal will, “help Microsoft accelerate innovation and market adoption for Windows Phones.”

When the acquisition is final, Microsoft’s first order of business might be to kill off the Nokia brand name altogether.

In a leaked internal letter supposedly sent by Nokia to its suppliers, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer informed its partners of the upcoming name change, “Upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation will change to Microsoft Mobile.”

No official statement has been made confirming or denying the rumored change in name.

Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Nokia’s Devices and Services business in September 2013 for 3.79 billion euros ($5.23 billion) plus an additional 1.65 billion euros ($2.27 billion) for a 10-year non-exclusive license on Nokia’s phone patents.

In Monday’s blog post, Microsoft also announced adjustments to the original agreement. Microsoft will take over Nokia.com and Nokia’s social media accounts for up to a year, and acquire the 21 China-based employees under Nokia’s Chief Technology Office, but will not be acquiring Nokia’s manufacturing plant in South Korea.

Once the world’s leading cellphone manufacturer, Nokia has struggled to stay profitable largely due to the poor showing of its Windows Phone-based Lumia smartphone. Samsung confirms fatal camera flaw on 'limited number' of Galaxy S5 smartphones

The Samsung Galaxy S5's 16-megapixel camera is one of its best assets, but it's also turned into something of a liability for the company just weeks after launch. Complaints across internet forums have documented a major flaw with the camera on some devices — particularly the Verizon Wireless model — that renders the shooter useless.

According to reports, a "camera failure" error has been randomly popping up for some new owners. There's no obvious cause behind the bug, but once the error is received, the camera hardware becomes permanently disabled. Users have taken afflicted S5 phones back to carrier stores and Samsung's own specialty sections at Best Buy in hopes of bringing the camera back to life, but only a physical exchange for a new device has remedied the problem so far.

Samsung has now confirmed that it's aware of the reports and is actively trying to assist impacted customers. In a statement, a company spokesperson told The Verge, "We have learned that a limited number of Galaxy S5 devices may have an issue that causes 'Camera Failure' pop-up error message." S5 owners with a busted camera are asked to call 1-888-987-4357 to arrange an exchange under Samsung's warranty, or they can visit their respective carrier for a swap. Verizon is also doing its part to spread the message, as seen below. The complaints haven't swelled to a crisis quite yet, so you probably shouldn't let the early hiccup sway you away from Samsung's flagship if you were planning to purchase it.

New York Times pits Galaxy S5 against iPhone 5s, says competition isn’t even close

Last week, we took an in-depth look at Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 smartphone to see how it compared with the HTC One (M8). While the competition was certainly intense, in the end we called HTC’s new flagship phone the best Android smartphone in the world. In terms of sales, however, the M8 will never compete with the Galaxy S5. Even HTC knows that. Apple’s flagship iPhone 5s is the only smartphone that sits at the top of the food chain alongside the Galaxy S5 when it comes to sales, and The New York Times recently pitted these two leading smartphones against each other to see which one should be called the best smartphone in the world.

Interestingly, the newspaper found that the competition wasn’t even close.

“Although it offers no spectacular advances over the previous version, Samsung seems to have done just enough with the S5 to stay ahead of every other Android phone maker,” NYT columnist Farhad Manjoo wrote. “The only plausible competition comes in the form of the HTC One, which, as my colleague Molly Wood wrote, is prettier than the S5 but not as functional. The upshot of all these reviews is that if you’re looking for the best Android phone, Samsung’s is the one to buy.”

He continued, “But that’s not the whole story. While there are probably some people who go out to shop for the best Android phone, I suspect that most people want to know which phone is best of all, whatever operating system it runs. In other words, how does the Galaxy S5 compare to the iPhone 5S, Apple’s six-month-old flagship device and the champion to beat?”

The answer, Manjoo says, is “not very well.”

According to The New York Times, the brand new Galaxy S5 really doesn’t complete on any level with the iPhone 5s, which is nearly seven months old at this point.

“By just about every major measure you’ll care about, from speed to design to ease of use to the quality of its apps, Samsung’s phone ranks behind the iPhone, sometimes far behind,” Manjoo wrote. “If you’re looking for the best phone on the market right now, I’d recommend going with the iPhone 5S.”

Manjoo says the Galaxy S5′s three biggest advantages over the iPhone 5s are slightly longer battery life, water-resistance and the phone’s larger display. The first two are minor advantages according to Manjoo, and the display size discrepancy will reportedly disappear later this year when Apple launches a larger iPhone 6 and an iPhone phablet.

The columnist concludes that Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is the best smartphone with a large screen that money can buy right now, and that will continue to be the case for the next few months. But Manjoo says that once Apple launches its larger iPhones, “Samsung’s smartphone ascendance may look a bit uncertain.”
