replacing Globe's modem/wifi router

anyone replaced their dsl modem/router? will globe provide you the details and assist you with it?
do they still need to activate the Mac address (i'm assuming yes since most ISPs do this).

the one that came with my sub has a low gain FIXED antenna. i want to replace it with a new one and with replaceable high gain antennas plus USB slot so my kids can use a shared drive.

asking here since my ticket with globe support is going in circles.

I use a third party wifi router and turned off the transmitter on the globe router. Forgot the settings but they're available online. You may need the router's admin password but that's also available online.

yes that's the easiest option. i already have a used wifi router available.
but i want to replace the whole unit and just keep 1 device para menos sa cabling.
i just want to be sure na pwde yung bibilhin ko.

I don't think they'll allow that. They want to stay in control by using their own firmware.

If a tech does finally visit maybe you can ask him to confirm.

What is the model of the CPE modem/router? Do you have admin access?

Typically, you don't replace the CPE modem/router. You still need it to convert DSL to/from Ethernet (ie. the "modem" part). Instead, you typically turn off its WiFi and set it to Bridge mode. After that, you then connect an aftermarket router to which you have full control of.

Internet(DSL) > (WAN)Globe CPE(LAN) > (WAN)Your_Router(LAN) > Your devices

This doesn’t yet address the specifics whether you’re getting a public IP address or not. In other words, I don’t know if you’re allowed to enable Bridge mode on the CPE nor if you’re behind a GNAT. But at least you get to choose what wireless AP you want.

The new Huawei DSL modem/routers allow bridge mode. The admin password can be found online. Public IP is dynamic and is a pain in the butt for some client VPNs. Business accounts are assigned static IPs.

Dynamic IP shouldn't be a problem if you're the one initiating the VPN connection (outbound). However, inbound VPN can be a problem and can usually be addressed by using a dynamic DNS service.

I am on dynamic IP but I am still able to VPN into my home from anywhere using dynamic DNS.

BTT:
Instead of disabling the WiFi on the CPE router, you can add a 2nd wireless router and set its WiFi to the same SSID and PSK as the first one. That will extend the coverage of your WiFi. Just follow best practices when allocating the channels (use non-overlapping channels) and make sure you're not using a channel that is already occupied by you or a neighbor.

In this setup, you won't use the routing and DHCP functionality of the 2nd router. You're only going to use it as a 2nd switch 2nd AP.... a wired extension of your network, if you will.

Most of the newer CPE's Huawei, ZTE, Zyxel, Fiberhome have USB slots for media sharing and can be tweaked as transparent bridge or routed. You may have to declare the old modem as defective or intermittent for them to replace the modem for free or just use your own router for total control. I'd be more comfortable on dynamic WAN iPs as the statics are prone to UDP land attacks. I am using a 10yr old(i think) Linkys EA2750 can be used as range extender, with hi-gain antennaes, and USB & guest mode function, MAC can also be filtered for total security within LAN.

it's a zte brand. yes i have the admin login for the Wan interface.
i only need to know if GLOBE will allow customer provided device as replacement.
their support is useless. lalo na pag inabutan ng shift change. i have 3 tickets just for asking this.

IDA in Singaore allows enduser purchased devices. before i switched to fiber i use my own cable modem. isang tawag lang sa ISP to update the mac address ok na.
