It has come to my attention that many from the current batch of Seagate SATA Hard Disks are defective or prone to fail within a couple of months.

This came after I have bought a 2.5in Seagate 500gb HDD to upgrade my netbook. Within a hour of installing it, I could hear "click-click" and squeaking (similar to fingernails on a blackboard) coming from the harddisk. I didn't want to wait for the HDD to fail so I had it replaced with the same capacity HDD but another brand.

    Medyo nakakatakot yan a.

Months ago, the company i worked for bought a batch of PC's with Seagate 500GB hdd, some of those hard drive has an issue with the firmware and needs to be reflashed.

I am also thinking of buying another hard drive for my PC as well. Now i have to decide which brand to get.

I bought a Seagate 3.5in 1TB hdd a couple of months ago and its doing well.

For the moment WD seems to be the safe choice. You just have to decide black or green.

I've stuck with WD as well. But, I stick with the boxed, retail types only because it's protected more from shock if the box was dropped.

Every single OEM hard drive that I bought had been problematic, no matter which brand although WD is also the safest bet. The only oem drive I have (besides the ones in the laptops) right now is a WD 2.5" 55gb portable hard drive. I bought it back in 2005 and it's still in great shape.

Sir, I had the same problem. I bought a Seagate HDD SATA.

I have already returned the defective HDD to the store and got a refund on it since they didn't have other brands aside from Seagate at the time. I already got a WD 500gb 2.5in SATA hdd and so far it's working fine in my netbook.

I forgot to ask. Are these Seagate hard drives retail or oem?

I was thinking about buying a retail Seagate for a new pc I'm assembling.

OEM style. (no box, just the anti-static bag).

Unfortunately, the drive contained confidential data, so we could not easily return it. Luckily, we found a procedure on the internet that allowed us to flash the drive, so we got it working again.

In my experience working with computers, seagate drives are very reliable so this is quite a shock for me. Maybe they should not have merged with maxtor?

    Ok.

Yup. Those are the ones I avoid. I prefer the small premium of a boxed/retail hard drive.
