The literature has identified more definitive links between shale gas development and impacts on surface water quality, and emerging research is consistent with groundwater quality impacts. The rapid pace of expansion in the industry suggests that new research aimed at quantifying water quality impacts, characterizing their pathways, and assessing options (for industry and/or policymakers) for their mitigation will have high value
