I just find it odd that he wants to colonize a planet 140 million miles from earth when we have so many places here to populate like the polar ice caps, our huge oceans and many many more uninhabited places.

I believe NASA can send out people to Mars today if they wanted to... But the question is, will anyone survive the trip...
Things Musk never tackled.
1. How will passengers/people cope with the lack of gravity
2. How will he shield passengers/people from the radiation, both during the trip and when in Mars
3. How do you transport supplies for 100 passengers? for a 3 month trip? Let's not forget that vegetatation is still not available in Mars so people will also need to bring extra supplies to consume there
