Kinda on the expensive side, I have a Tecsun PL660 "World Band" radio which I got about a year ago but really never found the time to really sink my teeth into using it. But with the wire antenna it comes with, so far I can tune in on some shortwave stations from China with ease.
For those who doesn't know, on certain times of the day and certain seasons of the year, conditions are right for shortwave/HF radio to 'skip' between the earth and the ionosphere (also known as skywave) allowing it to travel thousands of kilometers without line-of-sight.
Runs on 4xAA batteries. Pretty neat little thing for preppers.
OT: This thread sorta revived my interest on amateur radio. I operated on the 2-meter ham band (144-148MHz) back in the day. Ham radio has become less relevant now mainly because of the Internet, but it has been proven crucial in the coordination of relief during calamities, like in the weeks after Yolanda struck.
